Dear ICLEI Friends and Colleagues,

With the 12th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP12) just around the corner, ICLEI’s focus is on the parallel event, the 2014 Biodiversity Summit for Cities and Subnational Governments, to be held in the Republic of Korea from 12th to 14th October. With cities and subnational governments at the forefront of managing biodiversity and integrating it into the daily lives of citizens and local authorities, the ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center is working closely with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) to build on the momentum that has been cultivated over the last four CBD COPs. The progress on a global scale can be seen in the significant interest and engagement of cities and subnational governments in the biodiversity movement - from small projects initiating consideration of biodiversity and ecosystem services, to large-scale initiatives connecting and planning for integrated, energy efficient and participatory governments - as well as in the support from Parties for these actions. The Biodiversity Summit is one mechanism through which the collective voice of local authorities can be heard, calling for action and collaboration across various levels of government to effectively conserve and sustainably manage biodiversity.

The suite of cutting-edge programs and tools which support integrated urban development and effective biodiversity management; developed by ICLEI’s Cities Biodiversity Center, ICLEI’s regional secretariats, offices and partners; strengthens the role of cities and local governments in the pursuit of greater sustainability. In addition, more than ever before, cities are working closely with subnational governments and Parties and achieving exciting results. But we cannot rest yet! Biodiversity and ecosystem services need to be an integral part of all facets of city, subnational and national government management and planning to ensure the adoption of sustainable development practices and the preservation of important ecosystems and local biodiversity.

Best wishes!

Mayor Troy Pickard
