Three Super Bowl stars who now make wine
The Super Bowl is just a few days away and in honor of some of football’s great players, we’d like to celebrate those who have kept their hands dirty even after their playing days were done….in the world of wine.
With the 49ers stadium, Candlestick Park, only a short drive from the Napa Valley, it should come as no surprise that Joe Montana got into the wine game. Following his four Super Bowl victories, one of the greatest to play the the sport teamed up with one of Napa Valley’s classic vintners to create a wine sculpted from a Howell Mountain vineyard owned by Joe Cool himself.

Before Tom Brady there was Drew Bledsoe, who took the New England Patriots to Super Bowl XXXI. The former #1 draft pick now has his sights set on creating one of Walla Walla’s finest wines. He admittedly preferred more “malty” beverages while at the University of Washington, but is eager to unveil his first bottling, a 2007 Cabernet, this year.

During his days playing in Oakland, Charles Woodson not only went to Super Bowl XXXVII, but evidently went on a few journeys in California wine country. Now in Greenbay, the Heisman Trophy winner is hoping to make award-winning wines. Unfortunately, mum’s the word for Woodson due to NFL rules that prevent him from promoting any alcoholic beverage—including his wine. Until he retires we’ll have to talk it up for him.

So, while you’re watching the game this Sunday, or the equally entertaining half-time show, toast these Super Bowl greats who now make their own wine!
