Dear Friend,
Happy 2010! Last year proved to be a great year for KIPP LA Schools, and with two new elementary schools slated to open this summer, 2010 is sure to be another exciting one. Look for future e-newsletters with updates on our new schools, KIPP Empower Academy and KIPP Comienza Community Prep.
But for now, let's explore recent happenings at KIPP LA Prep, KIPP Academy of Opportunity, and KIPP Raíces Academy. Read on to learn about KIPP LA Prep's organic garden, recent grants to KIPP LA, and KIPP Raíces' Winter Concert.

Organic Garden at KIPP LA Prep Flourishes
It was an unusual sight for the grounds of a former tortilla factory: 20 students, teachers, and volunteers constructing four large planter boxes and planting organic vegetables on a Saturday morning.
Nevertheless, KIPP LA Prep - whose building formerly served as a tortilla factory - is now home to a flourishing garden of lettuce, green beans, cauliflower, and onions. The Garden Groundbreaking last October launched the school's new garden project, giving students a chance to cultivate plants - and their own green thumbs.
Now, in January, the garden is braving the elements and growing healthily. For the latest pictures of the garden, check out KIPP LA's Facebook page.

A huge thank you to the volunteers and donors who provided the know-how and supplies to get this garden off the ground: Heidi & Sean Ross, Barbara & Bill Spencer of Windrose Farms, Home Depot, and Lowe's. And thank you to the staff who pitched in: Ms. Peterson, Ms. Petrey, Mr. Hahn, and Ms. Martinez.

Recent Grants Benefit Arts Education and Other Programs |

KAO fifth graders admire their new instruments, which were donated by the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation.
Four generous organizations
recently contributed to KIPP LA's arts and academic programming, ensuring our students continue to receive a
well-rounded, high-quality education, even in this time of economic
uncertainty.
The Mayer & Morris Kaplan Family Foundation, a prior supporter of KIPP LA Prep, awarded KIPP LA $50,000 to support our schools.
Another previous KIPP LA supporter, the Carol & James Collins Foundation, granted KIPP LA $10,000 towards our expansion efforts.
The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation surprised KIPP Academy of Opportunity (KAO) students with more than $30,000 worth of musical instruments in mid-January. KAO also received $20,000 from fine jewelry company Tacori. Tacori's gift is intended to help KAO launch a visual arts program to complement its existing performing arts classes.
"The KIPP LA ‘Team and Family' sincerely appreciates the support we've received from these organizations," said Marcia Aaron, KIPP LA's executive director. "Their dollars ensure we can continue to provide our students the excellent, well-rounded education they deserve."

KIPP Raíces
Winter Concert a Huge Success
In December, KIPP Raíces Academy's "Achievers" demonstrated some of their many talents at the school's second annual Winter Concert.
Family, friends, and staff packed into the gym at Belvedere Park in East LA to watch each kindergarten and first grade homeroom perform a holiday song-and-dance number. Highlights included Princeton homeroom's rendition of "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" and Occidental's "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."
Like last year, parents and families transformed the gym into a winter wonderland, as well as provided heaping portions of holiday treats. Thank you to Erika Calderon and all the other parents who made the event possible, and to Mrs. Palmer and Ms. Wiener, the staff concert committee.
Only a year and a half after the school opened, KIPP Raíces has already established a wonderful holiday tradition.
