Middle Schools Celebrate Eighth Grade Culmination
KIPP Academy of Opportunity and KIPP LA Prep feted the Class of 2014 at Culmination ceremonies in June, celebrating students' accomplishments and their "team and family's" contributions to their success.
Amidst the praise, speakers also reminded "culminating" eighth graders that more important graduations are still to come in 2014, 2018, and beyond (high school, college, and graduate school, respectively). At KAO's ceremony, School Founder Mikelle Willis renamed the cohort of soon-to-be alums the Class of 2020, encouraging students to pursue education beyond college.
At KIPP LA Prep's Culmination, City Councilmember Jose Huizar stopped by to congratulate students, and student speakers expressed their heartfelt thanks to their teammates and teachers. According to KIPP LA Prep's School Leader Angella Martinez, Culmination was "a big love fest."
Culmination marked the end of students' middle school experience, as well as the high school placement process, which continues to achieve strong results across KIPP LA. Over 95 percent of the Class of 2014 were placed in KIPP LA-approved college-preparatory high schools.

Several students earned full rides to prestigious boarding and independent day schools. |

Waiting for "Superman": Have You Taken the Pledge?
From the director of An Inconvenient Truth comes a film that examines the crisis of public education. Waiting for "Superman," which features our very own KIPP LA Prep, takes a riveting look at America's floundering education system and explores innovative approaches taken by education reformers and charter schools.
By pledging to see the film when it comes out this fall, you will demonstrate your support for improving public education in America. Your pledge will also help make possible a large donation of books from First Book, a non-profit that promotes literacy, to kids in need.

Year-End Field Lessons Expose Students to New Experiences |
At KIPP LA's middle schools, the month of June brings more than just the excitement of impending summer: it also brings year-end field lessons.
Students who met the academic and behavioral requirements to earn the trips travelled to a wide variety of outdoor classrooms to learn both academic and life lessons.
Highlights included KIPP Academy of Opportunity eighth graders working with their KIPP cousins from RISE Academy in Newark, NJ, and local students to build a school in Costa Rica, and KIPP LA Prep sixth graders dissecting a squid on Catalina Island.
