Dear Friend,
With the 2008-09 school year over and the next one not too far off, KIPP LA staff and students are resting, recharging, and preparing to make the 2009-10 school year another great one.
Before summer vacation began, however, our schools busied themselves with year-end field lessons and a wide variety of special events. Read on for all the details, and to learn about recent grants KIPP LA has received.

Guests Snap Up KIPPster Art at MOKA
|
|
|
"Art at KIPP has really helped me grow and feel better about myself," KIPP LA Prep eighth grader Polly H. told a rapt crowd at the third annual MOKA (Museum of KIPP Art), where art by Polly and her fellow KIPPsters was on display and up for auction.
Held in an art studio-home at the Brewery, this year's MOKA celebrated the accomplishments of our student-artists, introduced KIPP LA to new friends, and gave guests the opportunity to start - or add to - a collection of KIPPster art.
By the end of the evening, after some furious last-minute bidding, nearly 50 pieces of art were snapped up by guests, whose contributions will help support art classes at KIPP LA's schools.

Special thank you to Carl Smith and Melynda Eccles for so generously hosting MOKA; to Bristol Farms, Roots Runs Deep Winery, La Mascota, Starbucks, and Food 4 Less for donating refreshments for the event; and to all our guests for supporting KIPP LA's wonderful art programs.

KIPP
LA middle school students made their annual treks to outdoor classrooms
across the country - and even to another part of the continent - as
year-end field lessons got underway in June.
Highlights included spelunking in Costa Rica for KIPP Academy of Opportunity's eighth graders, snorkeling and kayaking off Catalina Island for KIPP LA Prep's sixth graders, and hiking through Utah's beautiful national parks for sixth graders from KAO and seventh graders for KIPP LA Prep.

KIPP LA Receives Several Grants |
|
|
Over the past two months, KIPP LA has been awarded several generous grants from both previous supporters and a new friend.
Three previous supporters contributed a total of $150,000 to KIPP LA. To support our expansion efforts, the Joseph Drown Foundation awarded $50,000 and the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation granted us $75,000. First Republic Bank granted KIPP Academy of Opportunity $25,000 via All Stars Helping Kids.
New to KIPP LA was the RGK Foundation, which awarded us $15,000 for leadership development programs.
"We are truly grateful for the support we've received from these organizations," said Marcia Aaron, executive director of KIPP LA. "Especially during this budget crisis, we rely on our valued supporters to ensure that we can help our students climb the mountain to college."
Thank you to First Republic Bank, Joseph Drown Foundation, Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, and RGK Foundation for supporting KIPP LA's schools and students.

Schools Wrap Up Year With Special Events
|
|
|
As the school year wound down, KIPP LA students engaged in activities that both expanded their horizons and allowed them to let loose.
KIPP Raíces kindergarteners celebrated the end of the year with several activities, including a Carnival and Art Celebration. At the Carnival, Principal Amber Young braved the dunk tank, where several students showed off their good aim. For the Art Celebration, the school turned into an art museum and several students dressed up as "Mini Masters", the artists they had studied throughout the year.
At KIPP LA Prep, students displayed projects related to domestic and international social issues, ranging from Hurricane Katrina to homelessness to child soldiers, and educated visitors about those issues at the Awaken Project.
Former students from KIPP Academy of Opportunity returned for an alumni mixer that featured a performance by an alumni rock band and guest speakers who talked to alums about how to prepare for college and the work world.

Both middle schools celebrated eighth grade promotion
with ceremonies. At KIPP Academy of Opportunity's Culmination,
Councilmember Bernard Parks reminded students that while middle school
culmination is an accomplishment, it's not the end goal. Meanwhile,
KIPP LA Prep student speeches at their Promotion focused on appreciation of their past,
present, and future.
