Dear Friend,

KIPPsters big and small are back in the classroom and back in action! Week three of the regular school year is underway, and everyone is riding high on excellent results from last year -- and working hard to make this year's gains even bigger.

Read on to learn about our schools' academic achievements, a recent grant from the Quest Foundation, the many volunteer opportunities in our schools, the upcoming Choice and Commitment Awards event, and an MSNBC show featuring our KIPP cousins in Austin, Texas.

KIPP LA Schools Achieve Outstanding Results

Students at KIPP LA's three schools made incredible gains over the course of 2008-09 school year, according to state test scores and other standardized test results.

KIPP LA's two middle schools, KIPP LA Prep and KIPP Academy of Opportunity, earned Academic Performance Index scores of 832 and 780 respectively (on a scale of 200 to 1000). Both schools outperformed 80 percent of middle schools in Los Angeles Unified School District, with KIPP LA Prep ranking seventh among all LAUSD middle schools.

At KIPP Raíces Academy, KIPP LA's new elementary school, the inaugural class of kindergarteners showed impressive mastery of all subjects by the end of the school year, according the national SAT-10 test.

Ninety-one percent of kindergarteners scored at or above the national average in reading and 77 percent scored at that level in math, compared to both kindergarteners and first graders.  Student achievement in reading was especially impressive, given that 68 percent of kindergarteners were classified as English Language Learners.

"We are so proud of our students' achievements over the past year," said Marcia Aaron, executive director of KIPP LA. "These results demonstrate what can happen when students, parents, and teachers commit to putting in the effort necessary to enable all students to excel academically."

KIPP Raíces Academy is the proud new owner of a Mac laptop cart, thanks to a generous grant from the Quest Foundation.

Teachers and students alike are thrilled to have access to a mobile computer lab -- so students, or "Achievers", can practice typing and exploring the internet, and so instructors can easily measure their students' mastery of the concepts they teach.
"All of us at KIPP Raíces are sincerely grateful to the Quest Foundation for enabling us to purchase these laptops," said Amber Young, founding principal of KIPP Raíces Academy. "The laptops will give our students many more opportunities to develop the technology skills that are critical to their future success."
