Short Stuff
The term "short stuff" was not always viewed as a compliment. Anyone under 5 ft. has most likely been asked at least once "Are you standing in a well? I can't hear you up here." Well, the day has finally come when short stuff is the only way to be heard!
People are so pressed for time that if you can't get your message through within the first few seconds you are not making a connection. Be bold, be brief and beseech:
Be bold - Skip the niceties and/or the lengthy background. State the purpose of your message first.
Examples: Immediate Action Required- New Reporting Format. Your input is needed by Wednesday at noon re: how we should proceed on... I am calling to alert you to...
Be brief - Provide a bulleted list of the minimum information needed from or by the other person in order to act.
Beseech: close with a call to action. Examples: Please respond by...Submit your recommendations by... I will implement xyz unless I hear otherwise from you by...
Oh, and Be gone: ‘nuf said.
