GIT Chapter in the Czech Republic After months of following the GIT website and reading about the great events online, Zuzana Fantova and Michaela Surmanova, two lawyers from Prague focusing on technology sector, decided to start a new chapter in the Czech Republic, Europe. With help of Laura Slezinger, chapter head in San Francisco and Zuzana`s friend, Zuzana and Michaela were able to set up a call with Tommy Jenkins from NYC and they got an initial mentoring from her. As the central european reality is quite different from that in the US, where GIT mainly operates, Zuzana and Michaela will have to find their way how to operate the chapter in local conditions, using local language, etc. If you want to find out more about the Czech Republic, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_Republic. We look forward to bringing you more info about the Czech chapter in the future. |

Girls in Tech Denver/Boulder Launches On January 27, the first meeting of Girls in Tech Denver/Boulder took place at Techstars in downtown Boulder. 22 women came together to discuss the needs of the tech community in both cities. The overwheming response was that a group like this had been needed for a long time. This is the first attempt to form a multicity GIT chapter. The chapter is getting together for drinks at the Boulder Draft House prior to Ignite Boulder on Feb 10th. The first event planning meeting will be on Feb 17th at 6:00pm, location TBA. Look for wonderful things from this new chapter in the year ahead. Read more about the launch meeting at Boulder.me: http://boulder.me/girls-in-tech-and-how-im-jumping-right-into-the-boulder-tech-scene/ Thanks to GIT Denver/Boulder member Doniree Walker for the wonderful write-up. - Kate Brown, Managing Director GIT Denver/Boulder |

The Girls in Tech mentorship program for 2010 kicked off with an orientation for the amazing mentors signed up for the program. The GIT mentorship program is launching its second event titled the Technovation Spring 2010 Challenge in partnership with Iridiscent. This 8 week challenge will work with teams of female high school students to develop hands-on computer programming skills, and create a marketable new product. The students will learn programming with a new language that is being developed at Google called App Inventor for Android. The participants will create compelling mobile apps and develop a business plan for their app ideas. The event will conclude with a final competition, or “pitch night,” where teams will demo their prototypes and present their business plans to venture capitalists (VCs) with expertise in evaluating novel ideas and technologies, for a chance to win exciting prizes. As one of the mentors for this program, I got to meet some amazing women from different backgrounds. Through the course of the evening, we got to know each other as well as the program. At the mentor orientation we went through some fun and eye opening exercises where we were given programming and business concepts and asked to explain it in lay person terms. We also brainstormed ideas to provide high level topics around which the students can develop their applications. I cannot wait to meet the high school students in two weeks, and work with them on developing a viable idea and seeing it to fruition in the form of an engaging Android application.
We are looking for a few more female mentors for this program which starts February 23rd and ends April 22nd with the Pitch night. As mentors you will get the opportunity to meet other like-minded power women aka mentors, and make a real difference to the high schoolers’ lives. You will also get to work on cutting edge Android technology and phones that are being generously donated by Google. Please email technovation.challenge@gmail.com if you would like to be a mentor or be connected with the program in any way. |
