The photo below is from the past 2016 Memorial Day weekend. Lake Havasu Marine Association member volunteers provided complimentary golf cart shuttle service to boaters at Lake Havasu State Park. Since the Park was jammed to capacity with boaters wanting to launch, the overflow Windsor 4 parking area was called into service and there is considerable distance between Lot 4 and where the boats actually launch. To eliminate that long walk, LHMA rented several golf cars from Premier Golf Cars in Lake Havasu and had them at the ready, giving free shuttle rides between the ramps and parking lot to help expedite launching. Pictured here is ASU Havasu professor Sharon Harvey at the wheel of one of the cars along with LHMA CEO and president Jim Salscheider and wife Cindy also on-duty.

Trending 1: The summer boating season is now in full stride for Lake Havasu. Daily temperatures are now on the plus side of 100 degrees and boating activity and recreational water activities are up, even more than 2015. This past Memorial Day weekend, Lake Havasu's largest boat launch facility, Lake Havasu State Park, reported record boat launches for the three-day holiday. The primary reason for the increase in Lake Havasu boater activity is the continuing drought conditions in California, especially in the southern portion of the State . Many California lakes will again be unavailable to boaters by the July 4 th weekend due to low water levels. Here are some of the current capacity levels of popular Southern California lakes: Bass Lake – 50%, Castaic Lake – 54%, Diamond Valley Lake – 49%, Lake Elsinore (within 12' of disaster level according to the City Manager), Lake Millerton – 57%, Lake Nacimiento – 28%, Lake Perris – 36%, Lake Piru – 12%, Pine Flat Reservoir – 53%, Pyramid Lake – 90%, Lake San Antonio – 5%, Shasta – 93%. Given these lake levels and little or no chance of additional rain until later this winter, California boaters will again be making more frequent trips to the lower Colorado River for boating recreation in 2016. This will put additional pressure on California Agricultural Inspection Stations to perform thorough AIS inspections as boaters return to their home state of origin.

Trending 2:

LHMA member and grant director, Rich Miers has begun the investigation process for grant funding opportunities to help assist in the purchase of a Lake Havasu weather buoy which will provide much needed lake data. This data will then be available for the new Lake Havasu Boater App which is now under development by several ASU Havasu students. When fully developed, the App will include fundamental ‘things-to-know' for boaters including important information about protocols for preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. More updates regarding this App and weather buoy funding will be forthcoming in future reports.

The LHMA has completed and submitted for approval its 2016 “Sticker A Mussel” grant request from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
