When we started the “Sticker A Mussel” campaign in March 2013 we were entering unchartered waters, not knowing how boaters would receive the program and if we could get them to listen to a few minutes of aquatic invasive species education at the conclusion of their boating day while on the launch ramp. Now, fifty months later, 25,156 boaters to be exact, have listened to our AIS preventive pitch and answered countless questions about what was needed from them to help stop the spread of this menace to all fresh water bodies.

Getting volunteers to work the lower Colorado River ramps isn’t easy, especially during summer boating months when afternoon temperatures are routinely well above the 100 degree mark.  But they did it, and continue to do it, because as Lake Havasu Marine Association president and CEO Jim Salscheider said in the very beginning, “It’s the right thing to do.”

Making a difference?  We like to think so. Now, it’s on to the next 25,000!

The Lake Havasu Marine Association has completed making updates to its Sticker A Mussel ‘rack card’ which is distributed to boaters during each face-to-face education interaction on launch ramps and at our fifty places of information discrimination along the lower Colorado River (marine repair shops, resorts, boat dealerships, waterfront restaurants, etc.).  The informational ‘rack card’ has two significant changes;  first, it highlights the importance of cleaning anchors after every use, and making them easily accessible to inspection staff at state border checkpoints.  Second, a handy list (22) of state and Canadian watercraft inspection contacts is now provided on the ‘rack card’, making it easier for boaters with specific questions about AIS rules and protocols to find out the information they are seeking.

Our Volunteer Coordinators are responsible for our program management on the lake.
We thank them for their time and dedication to the Marine Association.
Feel free to call them directly if you would like to get involved.
