Hello Friend!

Welcome Spring! On March 20, we celebrated the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemispherea time to bid farewell to the cold of winter and to look forward to the new life of spring. It is a time of seasonal, as well as, personal transformation.

For many of our Fellows, the entire 12-month Fellowship is a time of transitionan opportunity for professional and personal transformation. Our Fellows embrace the opportunities provided during this year of service, develop new networks, and explore options that may never have before been offered to them. They embrace this state of transition as an opportunity for transformation.

Together, we celebrate the achievement. We also honor those special people who make the Atlas Corps experience so memorable. On behalf of Atlas Corps, I share with you a special tribute to Dr. Gary Weaverone of our nation's leading experts on American Culture, Culture Shock and Understanding Cultures. He served on the faculty of American University for nearly 50 years and did cultural orientation for the Diplomatic Corps, the Peace Corps, the Marine Corps, and Atlas Corps.

For 11 years, Dr. Weaver taught American Culture to our Fellows, this included 23 orientation classes and 20 graduation sessions on "reverse culture shock." For 23 Classes, he was the top ranked speaker. He saw us grow from 6 Fellows to nearly 100 Fellows each year. He served as mentor to our Fellows, Alumni, staff, and me. He told stories that Fellows and staff referred to throughout the entire year. Through his stories, Dr. Weaver conveyed how the world is diverse and can be confusing, but the "best way to deal with culture shock is to make a local friend." Now that is good advice.

Dr. Weaver will be missed. His lessons and his love will live on with the thousands of students, soldiers, diplomats, Peace Corps volunteers, and hundreds of Atlas Corps Fellows whom he inspired.

Dr. Weaver, thank you for being a local friend to all.
