HAPPY NEW YEAR
Kick off the New Year with an ambitious, admirable, attainable new years resolution - READ MORE, READ OFTEN! It's simple enough - just take time to enjoy the excitement of finding a great book, discovering a new author, exploring a completely new genre. Expand your repertoire of books read! The Library can help you with this goal; just come on over to your local branch and check out our collection or speak with our highly trained staff. Librarians are the perfect resource and can help you find what you are looking for or lead you into something new.
Ironically, READ MORE and READ OFTEN is also the slogan for the annual Stockton Reads! campaign, a program that starts in March and runs through July 2010. Stay tuned for more details. If you live outside of Stockton, don't let that stop you! Reading is important no matter where you live!
Other upcoming programs that encourage more reading include:
THE BIG READ 2010 - This year's chosen book is Jack London's Call of the Wild. Pick up a copy at any branch library and read, read, read to be ready for programs that will celebrate the story beginning in April!
DIA DE LOS NINOS - A fun annual event celebrating Mexican culture, children, families, and literacy. Events will be held at the Cesar Chavez Central Library in Stockton, the Manteca Branch Library, and the Tracy Branch Library. Along with fun activities and programs, children will have an opportunity to take home a free book to read with family. These events will be held in May!
SUMMER READING - The biggest Library program for over 50 years, Summer Reading encourages children, teens, families, and adults to continue reading during the summer months. Just because school is out doesn't mean reading is out! The Library will provide incentives, programs, and encouragement to all that want to keep on reading even if it isn't assigned. Get ready for the fun to begin in June.
Finally, from all of us at the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, here's wishing you all the best in 2010 and for years to come! Happy New Year!

FRIENDS THAT EAT TOGETHER... STAY TOGETHER
On Tuesday, January 19 at 6 p.m., the Friends of the Stockton Public Library will be holding their annual Meeting and Soup Supper at the First Unitarian Church on Pacific Avenue at Bristol Way.
Friends members, potential Friends members, Library staff, and Friends Board members will gather together to enjoy savory homemade soups, Genova bread, coffee and cookies.
The guest speaker for the evening is Nabeel Cajee, Executive Director of Stockton2020. Nabeel will be showing slides and speaking on his summer trip to South America, his visits to the libraries there, and particularly to the new showplace library in Medellin, Columbia. The Friends were one of the financial underwriters of his trip and are excited to hear about his experience.
Other items on the evening agenda include:
-
Acceptance of Financial Report for 2009
-
Results of balloting by mail on the re-application of 3 Friends board members
-
Approval of minutes of the annual meeting of January 2009

EXCITEMENT IS IN THE AIR
The Library & Literacy Foundation for San Joaquin County, a notable non-profit organization that supports programs that foster literacy, is kicking off the new year with exciting changes and praiseworthy events.
For starters, the Foundation now has an active Facebook page to share information with community literacy supporters! Within just two short weeks they have grown to 95 fans, a number that is sure to continue climbing. Stop on by, become a fan, read the news they have to share about the value of literacy, and comment back with your own ideas and encouragement. It's as simple as CLICKING RIGHT HERE.
The Foundation's presence on the web will be even more predominant when their BRAND SPANKING NEW WEBSITE launches later this month. Now supporters of the Foundation and literacy in general will have a one-stop virtual shop to learn more about what they provide to our community and to learn about other exciting upcoming events. And donations will be even easier too! With a click of the button, anyone will be able to help support the Foundation's causes such as the Reach Out & Read program. By donating funds, you can directly affect how many books get placed into the hands of a child!
Speaking of exciting upcoming events, mark your calendars for an exciting evening of basketball - and reading on January 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the UOP Spanos Center. The Foundation will interrupt the nationally broadcast (ESPN-U) Pacific vs. UC Davis men's basketball game with a mass Read-In demonstration during a pre-determined time out during the second half of the game.
Don't just bring your foam fingers, game shirts, and fog horns, also pack a fun children's book and be ready to join the crowd for a minute of silent reading as a show of solidarity that Stockton cares about reading. Watch Pacific students, dance teams, pep bands, and the UOP mascot show their support for the value of books and reading with their wildly entertaining silliness as they take over the floor during the Time Out!
The children's book you bring can be donated to the Reach Out & Read San Joaquin program at the end of the game by placing it into a collection bin. Reach Out & Read San Joaquin promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. To learn more about how you can help this program continue its success, please call (209) 937-7196.
