LEEDing the Charge
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. Shorepower's electric vehicle charging stations help builders and developers achieve LEED certification by contributing points towards transportation and green energy.
For one example, a solar-powered Shorepower EV station was recently unveiled at the Shaver Green building in Portland, Oregon. The building is a six-story, 89,000 sq. ft. apartment building offering 85 housing units. The building has achieved LEED Gold certification.

Tax Credits for EVs
Eve n though "mainstream" plug-in electric vehicles won't be coming to market until next year, it's never too early to start planning.
Those interested in saving up to 90% on their vehicle fuel bills should take note of the federal tax credits available for EVs and PHEVs:
- Credits between $2,500 to
$7,500 based on battery capacity and will eventually scale back
based on sales volume per model.
- Sales and leases are both covered.
- Low speed electric vehicles and 2- & 3-
wheeled vehicles with batteries of at least 2.5 kWh are eligible for a 10% tax
credit up to $2,500 through 2011.
- Qualified conversions of vehicles to plug-in
hybrid or all electric are eligible for a 10% tax credit up to $4,000 through
2011.
- Limited
to vehicles weighing less than 14,000 lbs.
State tax credits are also available and vary from state to state.

Idle Reduction Marches Forward
Idle Reduction (IR) is more than just idle chatter these days, with regulations and incentives increasing in nearly every state. With more than 2 billion gallons of fuel wasted every year through idling, 35 states now have active programs for Idle Reduction whether it is a complete ban or three- to 15-minute idling limit, with exceptions and temperature limits. Fines range from $100 to $25,000 per occurrence with up to one year imprisonment in some states.
According to a recent report from Frost and Sullivan, the market for idle reduction equipment will experience
considerable growth due to imminent government regulations. The good news is that up to $75 million of the Recovery Act funds are being allocated toward IR, so more infrastructure including Shorepower plug-in pedestals is on the way.
Shorepower Comes to N. Carolina
Big Boys Truck Stop on Interstate-95 in Kenly, NC (40 miles SE of Raleigh) will soon have truck stop electrification built by Shorepower. When completed at the end of this year, the project will electrify 24 parking spaces allowing truckers to plug in electricity for creature comforts and shut off their engines during overnight stays, thereby reducing toxic air pollution, carbon dioxide emissions, and fuel costs.
If you operate a truck stop or travel center, recovery funds may be used for up to 100% of the cost of installing Truck Stop Electrification at your site. Please email jkim@shorepower.com for more information.
