Idle Reduction a "No Brainer"

polluting-truckThe waste and pollution created by truck idling, or idling of any kind for that matter - is one of those problems that seems so simple to solve - stop running your engine while parked. With 35 states and jurisdictions now limiting or prohibiting idling, there may not be a choice for drivers. In a recent article that appeared in TruckingInfo.com, Jim Park, Equipment Editor commented that "most observers now see 100 percent anti-idle regulation coverage as inevitable."

The good news is that Shorepower is coming to our nation's truck routes in a big way with places to plug in and equipment that makes plugging in more convenient. Our recent grand opening at Big Boys Truck Stop in North Carolina is the first of many new locations.

APUs Plug In To Shorepower

Shore power inletAuxilliary Power Units (APUs) are gaining in popularity as an idle-reduction strategy for long-haul trucks. Though diesel-fired APUs use much less fuel and emit less pollution, they are still combustion engines that "idle" and pollute. The good news is that many APUs now feature shore power connections that can plug into Shorepower Electrified Parking Spaces.

At least a dozen manufacturers now make shore power an option on their APUs including Hodyon Dynasys, Carrier Transicold, CentramaticEnertec, Diamond Power Systems and Comfort Master.

Philly Cracks Down on Idling

More and more cities and states are cracking down on the wasteful practice of truck and bus idling. In Philadelphia, the Clean Air Council is getting ordinary citizens involved to stop truck idling and help police the local anti-idling laws. Philadelphia currently has a 5-minute idling limit and efforts are underway to encourage the public to report illegal vehicle idling by visiting idlefreephilly.org or calling 877-853-1552.idlefree.JPG
