New Partnerships

Angie & Hearing Dog, Shade:

Angie and Shade were partnered in August. Angie says, “Shade is doing very, very well. He is excellent at signaling for the door now—he takes me and greets the person when I tell him to do so. He has auto-retrieved my keys and some clothing items, my hat and his leash as well as a few items for others (shoes when dropped). He will get things for me when I tell him (shoes, socks, bag).

Shade is adjusting nicely into a very gentle, protective and very competent assistance dog, and is learning to adapt to checking new things out…His demeanor is excellent—mature, calm, confident, protective and watchful/aware yet not aggressive.”

Jill and In-Home Service & Hearing Dog Bennett

Bennett helps Jill, who is in a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury and has a hearing impairment, in the home by retrieving dropped items, alerting to the doorbell, a knock on the door, the phone, etc. Jill’s husband Bob is also hard of hearing, so Bennett alerts Bob when Jill is calling for him.

One day Bennett began pawing under the bed with no warning. Bob and Jill checked to see if there was a toy under the bed, or if the noise coming from Jill’s wound vac machine had changed, but it hadn’t. It turned out that Jill’s tubing had fallen off the bed and was hanging down. As soon as she put it back up on the bed he immediately stopped pawing and was fine - he knew that was not supposed to happen.

For fun, Bennett loves playing with all kinds of toys, and running with the woman who helps Jill three times a week – she says he is a great motivator for her!

Jill and Bennett have already developed an incredible bond. Bennett has also become great pals with Bob, and has brought joy to his life. They consider him a true blessing!
