Mercy Education Project visits Detroit Symphony Orchestra
Students, volunteers and friends of Mercy Education Project were able to gather at a performance of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on
Jan. 29 thanks to
tickets generously donated by board member Dr. Glenda Price.
The concert
featured the music of Regina Carter, a renowned violinist and native Detroiter, and was the first trip to the DSO for many of our students. It was preceded by a reception where guests were able to greet
old friends and meet new people involved at MEP.
Pictured is MEP fifth grader Ivette, who is also the daughter of an MEP alumna. More pictures of the
event are posted on Facebook.

Girls make birthday special for Miss China
When MEP program specialist China Brown celebrated her birthday last month, the girls in tutoring were eager to make cards for "Miss China." Those in Wednesday's second session took it one step further--they pooled the tickets they earned for good behavior to get her a present from the prize closet. China was nearly in tears when she saw the perfume set they got her, not to mention all the cards and drawings she received.

In her own words
An excerpt from "How I Found Jack the Genie"
A creative writing assignment by MEP student Kenyatta
 One
hot and sunny afternoon, I was walking on the beach catching some fresh
air and letting the sand roll through my bare feet. Suddenly, I stubbed
my toe on a metal object that was half hidden in the sand. I reached
down to pull out the object and discovered that it was an ancient oil
lamp, just like the kind one reads about in story books. Instantly, I
thought to rub it just to see what would happen.
Wow! A genie appeared just like in the movies. I fell to the ground in
shock. A huge gray man with big yellow eyes, bright colored clothes and
big feet popped out of the lamp.
He said: "Don't be afraid. I'm Jack the Genie." He also said that I had
three wishes that he could grant me, but the only restriction on my
wishes was that none of them could cause harm to another person.
I quickly stood up and thought cautiously about what was going to be my
first wish.
