This year marks Mercy Education Project's second annual Emerging Leaders Summer Program, a special program for middle school girls to learn about college, careers and goal-setting and receive academic support.
The program will be based at the University of Detroit Mercy, and is available to girls entering grades 7 through 9.
Girls in the program will take field trips twice a week to college campuses, interesting workplaces or cultural centers. They'll also have time for swimming, skating and team building. Girls who finish the program will go on an overnight trip.
If you'd like to be a part of Emerging Leaders, you can help by making a donation or by sponsoring field trips or meals for up to 30 girls:
-
Swimming at Downriver YMCA: $150
-
One day breakfast and lunch during academic programming: $150
-
Macomb Recreation Center swimming: $210
-
Lunch at MSU dorm cafeteria: $270
-
Final luncheon and presentation: $600
-
End-of-program overnight trip: $2,000
Contact Melanie Ward to make a donation.

Students become alumnae at MEP graduation

More than 100 guests attended Mercy Education Project's 2010 commencement ceremony to celebrate our nine graduates.
Fredia, Lucy, Celina, Mya, Yvette, Esther, Estelle and Shelia all earned their GEDs during the 2009-2010 academic school year. Aysieah, an alumna who had been unable to attend graduation the year before, also walked.
Guests heard from keynote speaker Joanne Dawley, DDS, past president of the Michigan Dental Association and a 2008 Doorway to the Future PHD Honoree. Graduates received certificates recognizing their GEDs and their hard work at MEP.
Many thanks to graduation sponsor Northville-Novi AAUW, which made the ceremony and reception possible. Thanks also to all the donors and volunteers who make it possible for MEP students to earn their GEDs.
Golf outing to support MEP bus fund
Mercy Education Project wil be the beneficiary of the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community 17th Annual Side-by-Side Golf Outing. Proceeds will go to help purchase a much-needed bus to transport students.
The golf outing will be held July 19 at Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon, Mich. The day will include an 18-hold scramble, driving range time, games and prizes, lunch, cocktails, dinner and a silent auction.
See the brochure for more information. For information on tickets and sponsorships, contact Barbara Milbauer at BMilbauer@mercywmw.org or (248) 476-8000 x212.
Child development classes held at MEP
Mercy Education Project offered its child development classes in-house during the month of June. The three-day course offered 20 participants the chance to learn about child behavior, appropriate discipline and special-needs children.
The classes, which are offered several times throughout the year, are taught by Carole Ann Beaman, a psychologist and MEP volunteer, and are sponsored by the Kresge Foundation.
MEP helps women open doors
In July, Mercy Education Project will begin a new program—Open Doors—to help formerly incarcerated women open doors to a brighter future.
The Open Doors program will take place on Fridays over five weeks, starting July 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at MEP. Guest speakers will discuss topics such as legal issues, bonding, resumes, job searching and green jobs training.
While similar programs exist to help formerly incarcerated women without stable homes, Open Doors will be available to women from all backgrounds.
Grant will help fund women's program
Mercy Education Project received a grant of $65,000 from the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Ministry Grants. The grant will help to support the Women’s Educational Services programs including the GED and pre-GED classes and workforce development activities.
