| Letter from the Director |

Dear Community of Wellness Members, Friends, and Supporters:
I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the Humboldt Park Health Forum. The Forum will take place on Friday October 23rd, from 9:30 am- 3pm at Association House of Chicago, 1116 N. Kedzie.
In 2004 the Sinai Urban Health Institute released the findings of its Community Health Survey. These
findings shed light into how disproportionately impacted the Humboldt
Park community is by preventable, chronic health conditions.
These
findings galvanized local leaders and the community mobilized itself
around the issue of health, leading to the creation of the Greater
Humboldt Park Community of Wellness and many different efforts to
eliminate the health disparities identified by the Survey.
While
the Forum aims to revisit the work that has been done to address health
disparities in the community, the primary focus of the Forum is to
inform our next steps as a coalition and to work as a group to
establish policy and advocacy agendas for each of our health priorities. In doing so, this will lead to better health outcomes that will be sustained in the long-term.
Please join us!
Sincerely,
Juana Ballesteros, RN, BSN, MPH

| Humboldt Park School Asthma Survey |
|
Through the support of a grant from the
Alliance for Research in Chicago Communities, the Asthma Task Force
developed and implemented a survey to assess real asthma levels in 2
Humboldt Park Schools. The survey also sought to
understand community perceptions and beliefs around asthma as well as
community factors impacting good asthma control.
During the spring of 2009 we surveyed over 500 parents at Von Humboldt and De Duprey schools. 25% of children in our study have asthma-that's 1 in 4 children, much higher than the national average of about 1 in 10.
Key findings:
- Smoking in 1 out of 4 homes.
- Pollution from cars sitting on streets reported by 75% of parents.
- Feelings of being unsafe felt by 2 out of 3 residents.
- Feelings of nervousness or stress felt by 80% of the community.
- Violence preventing children from playing outdoors in 60% of homes.
According to parents of
children with asthma in our survey, the schools are doing a good job
with asthma and parents want this to continue and even improve. Almost
90% of parents feel at least somewhat comfortable that the school properly treats asthma attacks. More than 80% of parents feel that the school should provide or continue to provide asthma education.
WHAT'S NEXT?
As a result of this study, several projects are underway to help children with asthma in the Humboldt Park community.
We
would like to thank all of the children, parents, teachers, school
administrators, and community members and leaders who helped make our
asthma survey possible!

Language Pathways to Health Careers
|
|
With support from LISC/NCP, the Health Careers Task
Force has developed a curriculum to improve the Spanish language skills
of health professionals. We are excited to report that a course focusing on Health Terminology in Spanish is currently being piloted at Near
North Health Systems with 15 staff members.
Through this project, we
aim to improve the quality of health care services to community
residents. We project a second pilot class of 20 to be delivered at
the Wright College Vocational Education Center in Humboldt Park by
early November. Thereafter, it is our hope that the courses can be delivered regularly at
various sites.

On August 1st thousands of people with smiling faces
took to eight miles of open streets for more than five hours to walk, bike, play, dance and enjoy their streets.
The event was completely free for residents
and everyone that participated embraced the day of fun physical activity,
while traveling through neighboring communities.
The Active Lifestyles Task Force worked
hard to organize activities for the event. Over 30 activities and
performances were offered in the Humboldt Park section of the route
including: yoga, dance, bike repairs, arts and crafts, capoeira, flag
football, running games, basketball, ceramics, steel drums and a
marching band. Learn more about Open Streets.
Thanks to the members of the Task Force and everyone who volunteered- you made Open Streets a successful event!
