Dear Community of Wellness Members, Friends, and Supporters: I would like to welcome you to our Summer 2009 Newsletter. We've updated to an e-newsletter; we hope you'll find it easy to use. Below you will find information on current projects, events and funding opportunities. I would like to acknowledge all the hard work of the Behavioral Health Task Force and congratulate them on the successful "Wellness as a Way of Life" depression awareness week. During the culminating community forum, held on May 16 at Casa Central, audience members heard from a panel of local professional experts as well as individuals who have personally dealt with and have overcome depression. Their stories offered those in the audience a sense of hope, especially since our community has a wealth of behavioral health resources. The Behavioral Health Task Force aims to make "Wellness as a Way of Life" an annual event, each year focusing on a different behavioral health topic. This is just one example of the work of the Community of Wellness. I urge you to learn more about the work of the other Task Forces by clicking on the links below. Also, please join us for our Summer Quarterly Meeting, scheduled for July 15 at 1pm. Location to be determined. The achievements of the Community of Wellness are a direct result of our members, supporters and Steering Committee. I thank you for your continued commitment to improving the health and wellness of the Greater Humboldt Park Community. Have a great, enjoyable, and safe summer. Warm regards,
Juana Ballesteros , RN BSN MPH

More than 300 people attended the week’s events. The Greater Humboldt
Park Community Campaign
Against Diabetes
The
Campaign will focus on a 72 block area
located between Chicago Avenue
on the south, Bloomingdale on the north, Kedzie on the west, and Western Avenue on
the east, where diabetes prevalence rates are highest. We anticipate a much
larger area will benefit from the work of the Campaign. The Campaign will
include everyone in the community.

Open
Streets is about reclaiming our neighborhood and opening the streets
for people to play and be active. We are closing off an 8 mile stretch
from Logan Square to Little Village and filling the streets with
community-run Activity Stations which include biking, running, dancing,
sports, and various health education and screenings. This event is an
opportunity to celebrate communities, encourage healthy physically
active lifestyles, and most importantly have fun in our neighborhoods. Learn more
