 Coming Up in Next Month's Issue . . .

Meet the Families!  Cincinnati Habitat will be building 10 new homes and rehabbing 1 home in 2009.  Meet the families who will be working alongside the volunteers to build the houses that they will one day call home.

VUP_button_400x300_04 (2).gifBelieve it or not, volunteering with Cincinnati Habitat has not always been an easy task -- especially if you were an "at-large" volunteer.  You see, for years our houses were built in large part by coalitions of churches who provided the funding, leadership and all the volunteers needed to build a house.  In fact, Cincinnati Habitat helped develop the coalition model.  CHFH's Development Director, Marissa Woodly, was even asked to lead a seminar on the subject for other affiliates at a recent Habitat for Humanity of Ohio conference.

But as other affiliates are learning more about building with coalitions, Cincinnati Habitat has found itself needing to increase its ability to build with at-large volunteers.  These are volunteers not tied to a specific donor or coalition of churches -- and as Cincinnati Habitat continues to stretch for a goal of eventually building 20+ houses/year, the need for at-large volunteers has exploded.  This year alone, over 1/3 of our homes will require volunteers not tied to a specific donor or building group.

To manage this sudden increase in the need for volunteers, Cincinnati Habitat has begun using VolunteerUp, making it easier than ever for "at-large" volunteers to get involved in our work.  Now you can visit our web site and not only register to volunteer, but sign up for a specific date and location.  Once signed up, volunteers can even request an e-mail reminder as the work day approaches.

Right now we have opportunities for volunteers on 3 projects all at different stages in the build:  our Community Build on Hale, the Ohio National 1 House on Standish and the Madisonville build which is just starting up on Stewart Avenue.

To sign up to volunteer, click on the link above or visit the "Get Involved" page of our website.

 Farewell Stan

(Stanley Neumann passed away on Friday, June 19 at the age of 79)

Anyone who has been with Cincinnati Habitat for any length of time has probably come across Stan Neumann on one site or another.  A key construction volunteer, he came to Habitat in 1992 and was responsible for co-leading several Habitat homes in Avondale and Walnut Hills. Stan was known for his mentoring of volunteers, teaching them valuable skills necessary to accomplish various construction tasks.  Partner Families affectionately referred to him as “Santa Claus” because of his white beard and paunch belly. Stan eventually stepped into the role of helping with warranty work on Habitat homes doing everything from repairing loose siding to adjusting door hardware or fastening porch deck lumber.  Stan remained active with Habitat into 2008 even though he was already suffering from heart disease and had restrictions on physical activity.

Farewell, Stan -- you will be missed very much inside the Habitat community!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Family Selection Interviewers:  Each applicant that qualifies for a Habitat home is interviewed in their home by a team of two volunteers using a prepared list of questions.  This a great way for a couple, best friends or a pair of individuals to help Habitat's mission without ever swinging a hammer.

Volunteer Committee Members:  Volunteers are the heart of Habitat.  Volunteers need to be recruited, matched to their skills and interests, provided opportunities to make a worthwhile contribution, etc.  If you would be interested in helping to assure that Cincinnati Habitat continues to draw good volunteers and that those volunteers are having a valuable experience, consider becoming a Volunteer Committee member.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator (pdempster@cincinnati-habitat.org).
