Fire Prevention Month

firesafetylesson.JPGThis month, make it a point to talk to your children about fire safety. Children playing with fire cause about 300 deaths and $280 million in property damage each year nationwide. Unlike other types of disasters, home fires can often be prevented. The best way to prevent a fire is for the entire family to be prepared and educated.

The American Red Cross recommends that adults:

  • Install a smoke alarm in every level and sleeping area of your home.
  • Test smoke alarms once a month and replace batteries at least once a year.
  • Create and practice your home fire escape plan with your children several times a year.
  • Familiarize children with the sound of your smoke alarm and what to do when they hear it.
  • Keep matches, lighters and other ignitable substances out of the reach of children.

MIX volunteer Quinn Brenneke placed second in the contest with over 29% of the votes, and Kathleen, a young Red Cross supporter, placed third with 15% of the votes. Make sure to check out our Look Like Lincoln photo album to see all of the entries. Thank you to everyone who participated in our contest!

We'd also like to thank everyone who took part in our It's All About the Lincolns penny campaign for local disaster relief. During the six-week fundraiser, supporters helped us raise over $2,100 in loose change and bills, with additional funds pending. Many thanks to the 75+ locations who served as collection sites and the countless individuals who generously contributed their change for local relief.  Funds raised will help us provide emergency food, water and shelter to over 150 people in our community. Thank you for your participation. We couldn't have done it without you!
