'Free Speech About Science Act' Right on Target with Consumer Needs March/April 2010 Last month, on March 23, 2010, Representatives Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Jared Polis (D-CO) introduced the 'Free Speech About Science Act' to Congress. This bill, if passed, would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) so as to allow legitimate scientific research to be freely distributed to the public for foods, dietary supplements and for other purposes. It would, essentially, give dietary supplement and food manufacturers the right to cite scientific research studies from well-respected, peer-reviewed scientific journals on product labels that claim health benefits. Marketing Opinion Blog: A Case for Structure/Function Health Claim and Scientific Substantiation Guidance for Functional Foods & Beverages April 2010 In light of the recent warning letters sent to seventeen food/beverage companies concerning alleged unauthorized and misleading claims, it is no coincidence that some of these companies and others in the past have been prime targets for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over the years. Structure/function claims for functional foods and beverages are prone to continual misinterpretation, misunderstanding, and worse, intentional misuse. Why? The FDA issued guidance for substantiating structure/function claims for dietary supplements, but has not taken such action for foods. Making FDA compliant structure/function claims have long been put in the back-burner of FDA action. Therefore, I recommend, like many others, that the FDA provide clearly-defined guidance for making structure/function claims, specifically for conventional foods and beverages. The New Age of Cranberries: Extraordinary Benefits in a Centuries-Old Fruit Cranberry products, including juice and supplements, decrease the incidence of certain bacterial infections. There is an abundance of clinical evidence that supports this concept in the case of urinary tract infections in some people. Further study should be able to establish a precise and systematic approach to using cranberry products in the prevention of urinary tract infections and decreasing the overall incidence of this problem in the population. In addition, cranberry products may decrease the extent of infections by Helicobacter pylori, the bacterial species that causes gastric ulcers, as well as bacterial infections associated with plaque formation on teeth. Finally, preliminary observations suggest that cranberry may have cardio-protective and anticancer properties. April is Foot Health Awareness Month Evidence Supporting Usage of Tea Tree Oil for Topical Infections of the Foot and Other Areas is Promising, but Ongoing Research Needed In recognition of foot health month, the status of tea tree oil as an antimicrobial agent is reviewed. Tea tree oil shows great promise as an antifungal and antibacterial product. This includes topical infections of the foot and toe nails. |
