The Right Information Leads to a Promising Future

The staff at RCSN are here to help families of children and youth with disabilities and the people who work with them.  Here's just one example of a young woman and her mother who got a little help from RCSN:

Samantha, a 15-year-old Brooklyn student who uses a wheelchair, attended a school for children with multiple disabilities. She is bright, eager, and ambitious, but Samantha's school only offered a limited IEP Diploma, which would not qualify her for mainstream colleges.  But when Samantha attended an RCSN workshop with her mother, she learned about the options for preparing for life after high school.

With the help of an RCSN advocate, Samantha and her mom worked to get her enrolled in a school that provides the academic enrichment she wants and deserves, the therapies she needs, and the opportunity to earn the right kind of academic diploma necessary for college admission. This September, Samantha started at her new school. Now she is working hard, getting ready to apply to colleges - a challenge and opportunity that was once unthinkable.

Policy Update from RCSN's Advocates' Voices Blog

Creating Meaningful Diploma Options for Students with Special Needs

Too many parents and students mistakenly believe that the IEP Diploma is the same as a regular high school diploma. But this is not the case!

The IEP diploma says nothing about the competence of the student to go on to post-secondary education or employment. It is not recognized for the most part for college admission, for admission to trade schools, for Civil Service jobs, or for the military. Students and parents are often shocked to learn how difficult it is to further their education or get a job.

For this reason, RCSN has been working actively with other advocates to change the name of the IEP Diploma to something that does not mislead parents and students.

New RCSN Partnerships in the New Year

nycfamilies.jpg
RCSN is excited to start two collaborative projects in 2010.

We'll be teaming up with Mental Health Association (MHA) NYC's Family Resource Centers and the NYC Department of Education (DOE) Empowerment Schools: Bridges for Learning Network to provide critical services to families of children with mental health
or other special needs, preventing disconnection,
alleviating stress, and helping students succeed.
