Childhood into adult obesity. How are PARENTS to blame!

David S. Ludwig, M.D., Ph.D.

Last week, I met with the G. family in the Optimal Weight for Life (OWL) clinic at my hospital. One of the parents was overweight, and the other was obese. The five children were more severely obese and had numerous weight-related complications — one had evidence of fatty liver, one had high blood pressure, two had gastroesophageal reflux, two had orthopedic problems, three had marked insulin resistance, four had dyslipidemia, and all had emotional problems related to their weight.

The Price of Childhood Obesity-Why the costs could be 'catastrophic' if we don't stop the epidemic now.

Childhood Obesity: Make weight loss a family affair

ImageChildhood obesity treatment — and prevention — begins at home. Here's how to change unhealthy behaviors and create a healthy-weight environment for the entire family.
By Mayo Clinic staff

Childhood obesity is usually caused by eating too much and exercising too little. The solution is eating healthier foods and increasing physical activity, but it'll be tough for your child to do it alone. The most effective way to treat — and prevent — childhood obesity is to adopt healthier habits for the entire family.

Change family behaviors
Rather than singling out your child, encourage the whole family to make healthy lifestyle changes. Consider these helpful hints:

■Start small. Gradual changes are easiest to incorporate into the daily routine — and to maintain long term. Start by making a few small changes, such as turning off the TV during dinner, switching from soda to milk or water, or taking a family walk after dinner once a week.

THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN AMERICA TODAY
Coronary heart disease (CHD), the most common form of cardiovascular disease, is the leading cause of death in America. Over 13 million Americans suffer from CHD, which results in more than one million heart attacks per year, of which more than one half will be fatal. These statistics are in sharp contrast with the cardiac health of Americans at the beginning of the 20th century.

ImageJoy To Life Nutrition and weight Loss was founded when as a business health consultant visiting and advising doctors expressed concerns of the lack of during my visits with health professionals as a consultant I have had the pleasure of traveling the western hemisphere consulting with trative experience and as a consultant in the health industry makes me feel privileged to be managing director of JOY TO LIFE nutrition and weight loss centers. My staff and I have had the pleasure of meeting you at Doctors Educational events (CME/CE) or at Joy To Life sponsored educational workshops for patients, at your doctors office location. You had requested a follow-up of information on our Ideal Protein protocol and for Doctors, how business benefits with positive outcomes for your patients. When I was asked, "how Joy To Life helps doctors and health professionals", my response was "we increase patient satisfaction, referrals, and patient health results!"

Dr. Bill Frank is a prime example of the Joy To Life services we provide for him and his patients.

By Dr. Bill Frank Pres. North West Ohio Chiropractic Association

“I was honored when asked by managing director of “Joy To Life©” weight loss centers Bob Ehmann, to write how my experience with the Ideal Protein Diet© worked with my family, patients, and me.
I must admit I was skeptical when first approached in February 2008 and finally agreed to begin the protocol in March. After all, I was approached by many diet plans, pills, drinks, powders, and exercise programs, over my thirteen years of practice. What was impressive was the physiology, Endocrinology, and nutritional components of the protocol which made me comfortable in knowing of its success in eight other countries for the past twenty-three years.
As a health professional, there are many direct health consequences I have seen both neurologically, and musculoskeletal, from obesity issues that are diminishing the quality of life of my patients.
I have since lost over 85 pounds and with my patients, have a good understanding that once I meet my target weight loss, how to keep it off!”

According to Health and Human services 60% of North Americans are overweight and 42% are OBESE leading to health issues related to DIABETES, CHOLESTEROL DISORDER, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. All known as the "Deadly Quartet" or syndrome X!

Cost of Obesity
Research proves that people could live longer and healthier at an ideal body weight. The average American has gained around 8 pounds in the past 10 years. LSU researchers estimate that “the direct costs of obesity in the United States is now at 39.3 billion dollars a year. That is more than 5% of all medical costs.”
Market Data Enterprises says, “Americans spend another $38 billion a year trying to lose weight.”
Other researchers report that after a four and a half year study “the costs of long-term weight loss on one popular very-low-calorie diet program was $286.36 per pound”!! Long-term weight loss is not only expensive, but very hard to attain.
Obesity is not just a concern of a morbidly obese person. The problems affect society as a whole since obesity contributes to the incidence of chronic disease. According to the Surgeon General “Obesity, with its rank among the top ten diseases, may be America's number-one contributor to health care costs.”
