August 2011 News & Updates

Announcing the new Region 12 website!

The Region 12 website has been revamped and hopes to be your one-stop spot on the web for all useful regional information. There are two parts to the website, a public area and a members-only area. Much of the information you need is available in the public area. Look at each menu along the top and explore the website. Then, you'll want to log in as a member.

Please follow these instructions to log in as a member of Region 12:

One Voice, One Message - Let's Grow our Membership

Imagine 24,000 Sweet Adelines working together to promote barbershop harmony! Sounds cool doesn’t it? Well, you can be a part of this major, coordinated worldwide Open House in January 2012. Sweet Adelines International plans to create public awareness by building a consistent image and "brand" utilizing the real women. real harmony. real fun. graphics and messages across all of our regions and chapters.

Here’s the background: Because membership is our lifeblood and there has been a challenge in maintaining our membership numbers over the past few years, the membership committee at International put together a year-long pilot program based on the question: can we attract new members and increase public awareness by using the brand real women. real harmony. real fun. Six regions stepped up-to-the plate and agreed to participate from May 2009 through April 2010. Chapters participating kept motivated by sharing ideas which created a new bond and unity within their regions. The bottom line of the pilot program was two-fold! There was a smaller decline in membership numbers for the year and, overall, the program increased each chapter’s visibility through the branding graphics.

How did the individual choruses attract and promote themselves? Some examples included free vocal lessons, guest passes, or even promoting free trial memberships.

What did the choruses learn from the year-long event? That word of mouth was the best recruiting method as it involved the membership by sending flyers, personal emails, and using social networks. They also learned that not every chapter spent a lot of money on marketing and that using the concept of an “Open House” rehearsal attracted more guests and generated the highest conversion rates as guests did not feel obligated to join, but could come and go as they pleased.

So what’s it all about? Marketing promotions, such as Curves or Weight Watchers, have gone global and this is the direction Sweet Adelines International needs to think about. Imagine the power of us opening our doors at the same time using the same marketing templates to welcome the public to discover the joy of singing! After all, we are the best kept secret in the world! Why January? Why not! Yes, it’s winter, but January is the month for New Year’s resolutions and a time for change in one’s life. It’s also a universal time for renewal, personal growth and taking on new hobbies. SAI is strongly encouraging everyone to participate in this event during the month of January and to structure this global event to fit your chorus’ needs. Maybe your chorus would like to have more singers for Singing Valentines or you’d simply like to gain more members or showcase your chorus heading into one of its highlights of our Sweet Adeline year: performances and competitions! Take an honest look at your chorus’ needs. Be flexible and the sky’s the limit!!

What’s available to help promote? International wants you to use their marketing center on the International website. They would like you to update your website, marketing materials and Facebook pages using the "real women. real harmony. real fun." campaign and to include the SAI Logo, if you don’t already. Set realistic goals by taking an honesreal_woment look at your chorus and the kind of members you want to attract. Do you want experienced singers or would you prefer to emphasize a rookie/novice program to attract singers? Do you want singers who want to learn how to sing or do you want singers who love to sing? These are the kinds of things to think about as you develop your marketing plan.

International is also creating a video with the song "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" featuring selected choruses and quartets from around the globe. International will develop promotional materials around the word "sweet" since it is one of the latest buzz words around! How fitting that "sweet" is already in our name and can be a launching pad for your own creativity! International will provide new marketing graphics and templates specifically created for the Open House event. International will provide a step-by-step timeline to help chapters maximize their success.

Finally, promote, promote and promote! Publicity will be in The Pitch Pipe, on the SAI website, at the Director’s Seminar this month, in Houston, in the media and in national press releases! It’s up to us to get the word out at the local level. As you can see, this global expansion program is a very exciting event! The January 2011 edition of The Pitch Pipe has a more in-depth article about the pilot program and talks about SAI’s vision. You might want to refer to this article when talking with your management teams and directors about your Open House plan. This is going to require time and commitment from each chorus, and we are here to help.

At the September AIM weekend, we will be hosting a class from 11am to 12:15 pm (note new time!) to talk more about the event as well as offer help and answer questions you may have. We sincerely hope you’ll be able to join us as we’d love this opportunity to talk, share and trade motivating ideas that you are thinking about or already doing! If you are unable to join us in September or have questions for us right now, please feel free to email us and ask us anything on your mind about the global expansion. Every new member benefits us all! In harmony,

Kevran Day (Marketing Coordinator)
Kathy Hebert (Membership Coordinator)

New Chorus in Stockton

We are pleased to announce a new prospective chapter in the Region: Delta Harmony Xpress (DHX) Chorus in Stockton! From a membership prospective, it’s great to see this area in our Region revitalized with the sounds of Sweet Adelines harmony!

This prospective chorus is currently under the direction of Curtis Mannah who is a member and assistant director of the Stockton Portsmen Barbershop Chorus and American River Chorus in Sacramento. This small but mighty chapter is in the beginning stages of chartering, and rest assured their leadership is strong! Kay Stephens is the Team Coordinator for the chorus and is no stranger to Sweet Adelines. Kay moved to Stockton last August from Salisbury, Maryland, where she sang Bari with the Ocean Bay Chapter of Sweet Adelines. And she just happens to be Curtis’ mom! Pamela Mannah is currently the chorus’ publicity manager and is also Curtis’ wife! She has been heavily involved in getting the DHX off the ground and running. And last, but not least, and keeping it all in the family is Victoria Mannah, (Curtis & Pamela’s teenage daughter). She will be singing with the chorus, and has been to several YWIH workshops.

The Delta Harmony Xpress chorus invites you to "GET ON BOARD!" Their first rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday evening, August 7th, at 6 P.M. at the Universalist Unitarian Church on the corner of Pacific Avenue and Bristol Street in Stockton. Please register by phoning 209-476-1140 or emailing

Two Region 12 Directors Enter Talent Contest!

Christine_Wee_hulaJulie Starr (BASC) and Christine Wee (Na Leo Lani) entered the Saturday night "Sweet Adelines Got Talent" contest at the Directors/Judges/Arrangers' Seminar in Pennsylvania in July. The only rule of the contest was that barbershop could not be used. Julie directed the audience in "I'm a Little Teapot"...with her eyebrows. If you've not seen her "ambidextrous" talent, you might ask for a demonstration. Unfortunately, Julie said she received an "under time" penalty, so didn't finish with an award. (It's also unfortunate that the picture taken of her didn't turn out.) Christine Wee, on the other hand, received a $25 gift card to the SAI store for placing 3rd with her performance of an inspirational hula, "These Islands". The audience responded to her performance as if she'd sung a moving ballad, with sighs at the end and then thunderous applause. These 2 women made Region 12 very proud!
