Market News for Saturday 8/21/10

Braintree FM Email artIt's harvest season at the Braintree Farmers Market hosted by Sustainable Braintree.  The farmers having been working since early this year, while the snow was till blowing, ordering their seeds and planning their plantings to bring us the best choices they have to offer.  Join us every Saturday from 9 to 1, rain or shine, at the Braintree Town Hall Mall to enjoy the flavors that you just can't capture any other time of the year.  The foods at the market are extra flavorful because they're not mass produced by large food plants or factory farms that compromise flavor for a long shelf life.  The folks who bring their products to the market are passionate about their creations and have made it their priority to share their flavors with all of us.  These foods are meaningful and real.
Specials & Highlights for August 21st

When it comes to Ric's Pantry jams, jellies and preserves Ric encourages customers to think outside the English muffin. His products can be used for cooking and in combination with other ingredients to make delicious dishes. Ric is more than happy to talk to the customers about how to incorporate his products into recipes. This goes for his spices and seasonings as well.

Homestyle Caterers will be serving Falafel Wraps, the ever-popular Spinach Pies, Choc-full-of-Chicken Pies, Flaky Baklava, Crunchy Birds' Nests pastries, melt-in-your mouth Butter Cookies (filled with dates or walnuts), creamy homemade Rice Pudding, and this week's special-Moussaka... panko-crusted eggplant cutlets with a rich tomato sauce, and a creamy Bechemel topping baked in the oven. Yummy, Yummy!

The locally grown, tree ripened peaches are fabulous this year!!  In case you haven't had a chance to try them yet stop by and visit Ever So Humble Pie for a taste of their traditional Orchard Peach Pie.  They're using peaches from Carver Hill Orchard in Stow and they are ever-so-juicy and sugar sweet!

At Jack's Cookie Jar this week look for two new biscotti flavors... apple with walnut and ginger peach with Chambord along with their standard flavors.  Also this week the sugar cookies will be aimed at fun in the sun... in addition to Flip Flops and Beach Babies they will have beach towels, beach balls, starfish and sea creatures.  By popular request peanut butter sandwich cookies and almond paste macaroons will be on hand.  Look for the return of the rainbow stripe cookies.  Treat yourself to something that looks great and tastes great at Jack's.

This week's Featured Vendor is Deborah's Kitchen of Littleton, MA.  Deborah and her crew are makers of Spreadable Fruit and Relish for the discerning cook or those who just want to top their humble piece of toast. Their award winning spreads are made with 70% fruit, all natural ingredients, unbleached sugar and no preservatives for a superior taste and healthier, low sugar choice.

With 20-35 calories per tablespoon, their creative blend of multiple fruits makes each flavor a unique gourmet treat and easy meal enhancer. Each flavor has it's own profile to try as:  meat or fish glazes; marinade and barbecue sauces; veggie sauce; hors d'oeuvre and cheese toppers; dessert finisher; sandwich spreads; mix-ins for yogurt and cottage cheese; with breakfast breads, pancakes, or crepes; hot cereal toppings.

This is their 8th year of producing in two shared use kitchens called culinary incubators - designed to help small food entrepreneurs. One in Jamaica Plain and one in Greenfield, MA.  Deborah is dedicated to hiring locally, buying from local: farmers and distributors, and support many local community events with donations.

Their products are produced in 2 oz or 9 oz glass jars in 15 flavor combinations. For gifts they have their Tasting Towers of 3 stacked 2 oz jars with wooden spreader and their small, medium and large gift baskets with your choice of flavors packed inside - all festively wrapped ready for the perfect hostess gift or treat for your favorite fruit lover.  Give the perfect gift of local flavors.

They proudly sell at area specialty food stores and local Farmers Markets. Ask about their Frequent Jammer program at the Braintree Farmers Market. Purchase 9 -9oz jars over the selling season and they reward you with a free 10th jar of your choice. Rewarding their customers is something they love.
