St. Francis Sunday
St. Francis loved every living thing in God's creation. We honor him today as a patron saint of the environment. Blessed Francis reminds us that we are stewards of God's creation. This coming Sunday we will celebrate the life of St. Francis by being stewards of our own plot of land! Put your jeans on, grab your rake and come ready to pitch in after the 10 a.m. service as we take care of the fall chores outside the church.
Rector Away
Reverend Mary will be away through Friday of this week at the Clergy Leadership Project. If you have pastoral needs please contact the church office.
Safeguarding God's Children

All parish members who work with children or youth are required take the Safeguarding God's Children class. The next class will be held Saturday, Oct. 10 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Delmar. Registration is required to attend. If you plan to go, please call or e-mail the parish office so that Mark can make reservations for the entire St. Andrew's group.
Adult Confirmation / Reception
A class for adults seeking to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church will begin Tuesday, Oct. 6th. Classes will be held at 7 p.m. Please see Rev'd Mary if you are interested and sign-up in Carmichael Hall.
It's a Small World!
Prentiss and Frieda Carnell took a recent trip to Frieda's hometown of Newburyport, MA. When they arrived Sunday morning to worship at St. Paul's Church, where they were married in 1957, they were surprised and pleased to see "The Reverend Martha L. Hubbard, Rector" on the sign outside! Reverend Hubbard was a member of St. Andrew's in the 1980's. She was ordained in the Diocese of Rochester in 1994 and has been at St. Paul's since 2007. Prentiss Carnell graciously sent these pictures.
Russell Field Fund
St. Andrew's is blessed with a rich musical heritage. The Russell Field Fund, named for the former organist and choirmaster, raises money each year to support special musical events at St. Andrew's. Last year the parish hosted an extraordinary performance of Schubert's Mass in G. Another special event is planned for next March (details to come!). A letter asking for your support of the Russell Field Fund is soon to be in your mailbox: please consider supporting the continuation of this important ministry.
Partners in Outreach
Partners in Outreach met in September at Grace and Holy Innocents Church in Albany. The member parishes continued discussions about a cooperative effort to develop an overflow shelter in the City of Albany, possibly at St. Peter's Church, during the winter months. Volunteers from other parishes would be needed to make the overflow shelter viable. The group also met with the new rector at Grace and Holy Innocents and learned of efforts by that parish to grow and serve the neighboring community.
A Letter from the Youth Ministries Chair
On September 13th we began our new church school year. As I was sitting in the front pew that morning, I had a chance to watch our young children come to the Lord's table with out stretched hands waiting to receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. This got me reflecting on my own early church experiences that included waiting until I was twelve before being invited to the Eucharist. There are some who still question the current practice of administering Holy Communion at such a young age. We have many pamphlets in the rack outside church explaining how to raise children in faith; so I'll invite you to read them. But welcoming all to feed at the Holy Banquet is something I treasure about St. Andrew's. We work hard at including all in our church, and take seriously Jesus' words "Whoever welcomes in my name one of these children, welcomes me."
On October 18th, during the 10:00 service, Rev. Mary will offer a child's Eucharist upstairs in the Children's Chapel, while Rev. Keith Scott presides over the service in the main church. Our hope is to balance instruction in the Children's Chapel with worship in the main church. Once a month we will invite the children, and their families, to worship in the Children's Chapel. Sometimes that worship will include the Eucharist, and sometimes we will join the regular congregation at the Great Thanksgiving. I am proud to belong to a community that takes it's Baptismal covenant seriously, and welcomes and instructs all in the teachings and prayers of the Church.
