Aloha Friends,

It's a new year and a new decade. Our community faces some serious challenges, but there are also reasons to hope and opportunities to take action right now: Help address school furloughs and build school gardens, share your simplified holiday stories, and take a look at what lies ahead this year.

Mahalo for all you do to build the movement for a better Hawaii!

Share Your Simplify the Holidays Story

Help us close out the Simplify the Holidays Campaign by sharing your stories. If you simplified with your family, got creative with zero-waste gifts, or came down and got your gifts “green wrapped” at Ala Moana, post your pictures, videos, stories, and reflections. Our stories are what inspire others to take action and build a sense of community among us. Login to kanuhawaii.org and click the “Journal!” tab.

And, if you haven't been officially counted, please visit the Campaign Page at the link below, and tally up which actions you took. We'll summarize the impact of all of us working together, so please tell us if you took action!

Call to Action for Education

COOKIES FOR CLASSROOMS - State Capitol, Friday, Jan 29, 9-11am

After months of negotiations, our leaders have been unable return our children to the classroom. We're going to urge them to keep moving, going old school with a "bake sale" where students, parents, and Kanu members will raise money for teachers who want to return to the classroom.

We'll show we're willing to take kuleana and be part of the solution, while asking our leaders to do what we cannot – reopen all schools for all keiki. Bring home-baked goods to sell (we will package them up), and bring your kids, too! Wally "Famous" Amos will be on hand doing readings for keiki in the Capitol Rotunda. Email james@kanuhawaii.org with questions.

*NOTE: We cannot accept money on Capitol grounds but will bag baked goods and label them with information on how donations can be received on-line.

SUPPORT THE 1,000 STUDENT VOICES CAMPAIGN
http://www.pangalactic.com/sos808/index.ph/1000_Student_Voices

Save Our Schools Hawaii is collecting testimonies from students about how Furlough Fridays are affecting them. Students are the most important stakeholders in our public schools - let's help put their voices front and center! SOS Hawaii will display submissions at the Capitol on opening day. Get your letter or video submitted in time for the upcoming legislative session.

Why Our Community Needs Us Now - A New Year's Message

In February, Kanu Hawaii will be two years old. Last year, we learned to work together on some important issues. Our campaigns dealt with the future of food, housing, waste, energy, and education in Hawaii. They were an opportunity to practice standing (and taking a few steps) together.

In 2010, our community faces some of the most difficult challenges in its history. Hard times can breed hopelessness, cynicism, anger and selfishness. Kanu's way of pushing for change – with our own commitments, and with group demonstrations of kuleana – can be a powerful voice for hope, for aloha, and for real change in a year when all three are desperately needed...
