Aloha Friends,

Time for us to be the change and help lead the change on two important issues facing our community: Our kids are still being furloughed, and we have one last chance to urge our leaders and our teachers' union to get kids back to school. We can also help cut down on waste this holiday season - make your actions and impact count toward Simplify the Holidays goals.

Mahalo for all you do to build the movement for a better Hawaii!

LAST CHANCE TO GET KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL BY JANUARY

ImageWe've come a long way since the rallies in late October, but kids are still out of school. Why? It’s not for lack of solutions - see kanuhawaii.org/topic/education for examples. And, it’s not for lack of resources - the Governor and Legislature have targeted $50 million to help solve the problem.

Now, negotiations between the Governor, HSTA and DOE have stalled. If their next meeting on Tuesday fails, there will be no Special Session and no hope of getting kids back to school in January.

VIGIL FOR KEIKI
Join a vigil for Hawai‘i’s keiki, led by the parents of Hawai‘i Education Matters outside of the next negotiation meeting to let the parties know we’re still watching out for kids. This is our last chance to get students back to school by January! Tues, Dec 15, 8:20–8:45AM @ Headquarters (site of the negotiations), 1200 Ala Kapuna St., Honolulu, Hawaii 96819.

CONTACT KEY PARTIES
Can't make the Vigil? Then contact the key players before Tuesday. Let them know we want our kids back in school now. And, let's keep our messages respectful.

MAKE YOUR ACTIONS & IMPACT COUNT

Make your commitment count! We’re keeping track of the impact. Add your actions and your impact to the campaign today at this link:

If every person in Hawaii used just 1 less paper plate this holiday season, we'd keep 43,000 lbs of waste out of landfills and incinerators, and save a forest of 370 trees.

If every adult in Hawai‘i used 1 less plastic bag this holiday season, we’d prevent 26,000 lbs of greenhouse gas pollution normally created by bag manufacturing.

If every person recycled 1 plastic bottle, we’d keep 50,000 lbs of trash out of landfills, and save about 800 barrels of oil (because plastic is made from oil).

Email friends@kanuhawaii.org with a few lines describing how you are simplifying the holidays and we’ll post it to the campaign blog!
