Resilient Plants

See the Dahlia flowers at the top of the page? This plant bloomed hundreds of blooms this year, more than it ever bloomed in its original garden. I think it was grateful. Considering about 80 percent of the tubers were burned from the fires in Santa Rosa last year, this was a fantastic outcome!

Last year when a client asked me to go see what plants, if any, could be rescued from her property, I called my sweet friend and fellow landscaper Heather. She said “Yes!” right away when I asked her to go on a rescue mission with me. So, with the heaviest of hearts and minds we drove to the property. The garden was gone but for some succulents and cactus. There is no logical reason for them to have survived the heat of the fire but there they were (although a little singed) We dug them up with loving hands and placed them on a tarp to carry them to the truck. Before we left we walked the property. I remembered where every single plant had been and that’s when we started to dig for bulbs of Calla Lilly and tubers of Dahlia. I really had little hope of the Dahlia making it but just like people can be, this Dahlia was incredibly resilient!
