Attracting Hummingbirds to your Garden

There is just nothing quite like watching a hummingbird hover from flower to flower. They are so powerful for such small creatures!

In the Demo Garden you will not find hummingbird feeders with the red sugar water inside because I know I would be the worst at keeping a feeder clean and full! Instead, I plant a little something that hummingbirds like in each season. There is also a fountain where they like to bathe and get a drink of water (and they let me know when I haven’t turned the water on – they stand at the top and sulk!).

Hummingbirds are attracted to bright colors like orange, pink and purple but are especially attracted to red and yellow. They love tubular shaped flowers but will also visit other shapes as well. Here are some summer blooming plants that hummingbirds love: Abutilon, Lobelia cardinalis (needs staking), Hibiscus, Crocosmia, Cannas, Leonotis, Salvias, Liatris, Nepeta, Agave, Fuchsias, Calibrachoa, Monarda, Penstemon, Kniphofia, and Veronica. Plant placement is key. If you’re watching mostly from inside the house be sure to plant where your window frames the plants. If you want a special, up close encounter place a chair near the plant. I have a huge fuchsia in a container on the porch, next to my chair, so that when the hummingbirds come we are eye to eye!
