Paradoxes Portrayed: Drawings and Assemblages by Ummarid Eitharong

ImageOn Exhibit December 11, 2009 – Feb. 28, 2010. Free opening reception Friday, December 11, 2009 from 5:00-7:00 pm.

This exhibition communicates the artist’s desire to portray humanity and illuminate both the price of peace and the price of war. The exhibit and the themes in his work invite us to re-sensitize ourselves to the human experience, both good and bad. It is our hope that this exhibition can be a catalyst for dialogue about our challenges as we consider conflict in the world as well as the beauty of humanity, as portrayed in his images of family contrasted by the paradox of conflict.

"It’s about something we never learn. We continue doing it,” explains Eitharong.

A full range of community and educational events will occur with the exhibition entitled Picturing Peace: A Community Vision involving both students and the community at large with a targeted focus on involving community military groups and family members of both active military and veterans.

In addition, Eitharong is creating a large-scale installation work specifically for this exhibit, entitled Winds of Change: Totem for Sadako that will feature a suspended mushroom cloud made from 1000 peace cranes in honor of the Hiroshima survivor/victim that initiated the “peace crane” project worldwide. A community “fold-in”, inviting members of the public to fold a crane for this collaborative work, will be held during the 2009 DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts.

Additionally, the Museum is accepting peace cranes folded by community members to hang on the trees outside the Cultural Arts Center.
