Both remixing “found” technologies and creating his own software, Bell-Smith’s work brings humor, vibrancy, and provocative gestures that ask viewers to reconsider the cultural meaning of these iconic scenes.

Special ICA Project: CONSUMPTION

ICA at MECA, Porteous

CONSUMPTION will transform the ICA at MECA into a hive of activity for all ages. Visual and performing artists will develop hands-on programs and activities to engage students and the public in unconventional and imaginative ways. Programming will include: film screenings, dancing, a mega clothing swap, and children's cooking classes.

Continuing Studies

This summer, in addition to camp opportunities for youth, Continuing Studies will offer art adventures on location for adults. Locations include Cow Island (above), Fort Williams, Gilsland Farm, and Peak's Island. Online registration begins April 16.

Art Honors


Art Honors on May 8 will recognize the leadership of Donald Sussman and Earle Shettleworth.

Each semester, MECA invites artists, curators, and scholars to the College to meet with students in classrooms and critiques. In addition, visiting artists are asked to deliver a lecture. These artist talks are free and open to the public.

Simonds is known for the creation of on-site dwellings in New York’s Lower East Side for an imaginary civilization of Little People.

Lisi Raskin is fascinated by the military-industrial complex. Through the ICA, she will install a site specific piece in Portland this summer.

Windgate Winners
Two MECA seniors received the Windgate Fellowship of $15,000, one of the largest awards offered nationally to art students. Presented to only 10 students each year by the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design, the award recognizes exemplary skill in craft. Congratulations to MECA winners Aaron Decker a Metalsmithing & Jewelry major, and Tanner Price, a Woodworking & Furniture Design major.

Geary's Winner
Each year, the D.L. Geary Brewing Company sponsors a contest for the undergraduate students at MECA to design the label and packaging for the Summer Ale. The winner receives $5000 and their artwork on nearly 1 million bottles of beer. This year’s winner is Annie Mora, a Graphic Design junior from South Londonderry, Vermont.

“When thinking of a design for the Summer Ale I wanted to illustrate the energy of the ocean. The inspiration for the splash came from watercolor paintings that I do in my sketchbook,” said Geary's package design winner Annie Mora.

Located at 522 Congress Street in the heart of the Portland Arts District, MECA offers a BFA degree in 10 studio majors, an MFA in Studio Arts, a Post- Baccalaureate in Art Education and Continuing Studies for youths and adults. The Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA and the Joanne Waxman Library are free and open to the public.
