A Perpetual Present:
2011 MECA Faculty Selects Exhibition

Through December 23

This show presents the work of MECA faculty alongside professional peers of national and international regard. Selected artists include: Philip Brou with Johan Grimonprez, Judith Allen-Efstathiou with Eirene Efstathiou, and Matt Hutton with Corey Robinson.

This exhibition is the result of semester-long partnerships aimed at orienting first year students to college life and the local community.


The ICA at MECA exhibition includes work by faculty members Philip Brou, Judith Allen-Efstathiou, and Matt Hutton (above).

Holiday Sale
Porteous Building

Handmade arts and crafts made by MECA students, alumni, and faculty. Now on three floors of the Porteous Building.

Pow! Print Lab Pop-up Shop

A full-functioning store for two days only. The pop-up shop features an eclectic collection of student-made printed works ranging from wood-cuts to silk screened posters, limited edition bags, t-shirts, buttons, stickers and ornaments.

BFA Open House
December 10, 10am-3pm
Tour the facilities, see the residence halls, meet with faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Each semester, MECA invites artists, curators, and scholars to the College to meet with students in classrooms and critiques. In addition, visiting artists are asked to deliver a lecture. These artist talks are free and open to the public.

Faculty Lecture : Gan Xu
December 1, 1pm, Osher Hall
Art History faculty member Gan Xu will give a lecture titled, "Art Historian to Designer: My 390 Foot Buddha." Gan is currently designing a cultural park in China dedicated to Buddhism.

Faculty Lecture: Philip Brou
December 1, 2pm, ICA at MECA

Painting faculty member Philip Brou's work in the faculty exhibition is based on the South Portland hotel and room where two of the 9/11 hijackers began their day. Brou's work is currently on view in the ICA at MECA faculty exhibition.

Visiting Artist: Sarah Pierce
December 3, 6:00pm, Osher Hall

Pierce is currently working towards a PhD in Curatorial Knowledge at Goldsmiths College, University of London and is a regular lecturer in the MA in Visual Arts Practices at IADT in Ireland. In 2005 she represented Ireland at the 51st Venice Bienna

Visiting Artist Sarah Pierce represented Ireland in the 51st Venice Biennale.


The MECA Auction sold nearly $100,000 worth of artwork, with $30,000 going back to participating artists. Proceeds support student scholarships at the College.

Located at 522 Congress Street in the heart of the Portland Arts District, MECA offers a BFA degree in 10 studio majors, an MFA in Studio Arts, a Post- Baccalaureate in Art Education and Continuing Studies for youths and adults. The Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA and the Joanne Waxman Library are free and open to the public.

From December 23, 2011 - January 2, 2012, MECA will be closed for the winter holidays. We will re-open on Tuesday, January 3, 2012
