Ribbon Cutting + Celebration for
Woodworking & Furniture Design Department

June 7, 5:30pm, Porteous, 3rd floor


MECA celebrates the completion of the Woodworking & Furniture Design studio facilities. We will acknowledge the donors who made the renovations possible. Light refreshments will be served at 5:30pm with remarks by President Don Tuski and Associate Professor Matt Hutton at 6pm.

Reception for NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman

MECA, Creative Portland and the Maine Arts Commission host a reception for Rocco Landesman, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, following his 5pm presentation at Portland Stage Company.

MFA Visiting Artist Lecture Series

Michael Kimmelman

“From New York to Europe and Back Again”

Kimmelman’s talk is an intimate and story-filled reflection on his path from The New York Times’s Chief Art Critic, trawling the world’s museums and galleries to Foreign Correspondent (based in Berlin), reinventing cultural reporting from Marseille to Gaza to Berlin and Istanbul, all of which prepared the way for his current post as Architecture Critic, writing about issues facing us at a time when society and cities are rapidly changing.

Glass artist Beth Lipman lives and works in Sheboygan Falls, WI. She has received numerous awards, grants, and fellowships and exhibited at ICA at MECA, the RISD Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Beth Lipman, whose work was featured in the ICA at MECA in 2010, returns to the College to give an artist talk as part of the MFA Lecture Series.

Painting graduate Kathyrn Dodson '12 was selected to show at Gallery Dufour in Belfast. The exhibit featured the work of 25 contemporary Maine figure painters and photographers. Dodson won first prize in the category of non-photography.

Five Ceramics majors are attending a special session at The Watershed Center for the Center Arts. Students Lindsey Demuth, Anne Saffron, Vicki Koronkiewicz, Adrian King and Dena Girouxwill spend two weeks on site creating artwork in the studios of Watershed in exchange for preparing the center for the summer program.

Associate Professor of Printmaking Adriane Herman has a show at Western Exhibitions in Chicago.

Caleb Charland, artist-in-residence for the Media Collective, has work on view at the DeCordova and was selected to participate in the Copenhagen Photo Festival this summer.


MECA offers two residency programs in the summer. One is offered at the Stephen Pace House in Stonington, Maine and the other at the Jenny Family Compound in Nova Scotia.

The Stonington residencies were granted to MECA faculty member Mark Jamra, staffer Dietlind Vander Schaaf as well as alums Larissa Mellor ’04, Rachael Eastman ’94, and Nik Bsullak ’99. The Baie St Marie Artist and Family Residency at the Jenny Family Compound was awarded to Mark Marchesi ’99, Richard Metz MFA’00, Thomas Cummins MFA’05, and Crystal Heiden ’06, Conan Masterson and Christine Negus.

This enamel brooch by student Shelby Goldsmith was accepted to Beyond Borders: The 11th International Juried Enamel Exhibition sponsored by the Northern California Enamel Guild.
