The class of 2015 is here. MECA welcomed more than 125 new students from 20 different states to the  undergraduate program.


Rally: Alumni Biennial
Through October 9

Institute of Contemporary Art
at Maine College of Art

Rally highlights new bodies of work by five alumni: Quinlan Corey MFA ’06, Kreh Mellick ’05, Andrea Raynor ’92 , Edward Lott ’05, and Aaron Williams ’94. In addition, a special video screening will feature the work of Brett Walker ’06.

Speak More Clearly
Through October 9, 2011
ICA at MECA, Project Space
Utilizing video, audio, and installation, the audience is presented with the performative nature of speech.
Featuring work by Paul Chan, Tris Vonna-Michell, and an installation curated by Triple Candie.

MFA Retrospective
Through September 4
Porteous First Floor

A group exhibition featuring new MFA works from the 2011 summer session.

Maine Art Education Association Exhibition
September 26-October 21st
First Floor Hall Gallery & Zand Head Gallery

The annual exhibition of artwork by Maine art educators. Opening reception on First Friday, October 7, 5pm.

First Friday Art Walk
Friday, September 2, 5pm-8pm

View the alumni biennial exhibition in the ICA, the MFA retrospective on the first floor, work by the new freshman on the second floor. Students will be selling work in the lobby.

TWO: High Energy Juggling
September 24, 7pm, Osher Hall
Matthew and Jason Tardy have created a show that features everything from high tech juggling and fire eating to physical comedy and full body contortion. Donations welcomed. All proceeds support the Nagaloka Buddhist Center in Portland.

Visit MECA. Learn more about the four-year Bachelor of Fine Art program during one of our Open Houses this fall. Tour the facilities, meet students and faculty and make work in our studios.


Each semester, MECA invites artists, curators, and scholars to the College to meet with students in classrooms and critiques. In addition, visiting artists are asked to deliver a lecture. These artist talks are free and open to the public.

Faculty Lecture: Adriane Herman

Osher Hall
Adriane teaches in the Printmaking Department. Her work investigates
consumption through appropriated imagery and media ranging from archival to edible.

Woodworking & Furniture Design alum Edward Lott is a participating artist in Rally, currently on view in the ICA at MECA.


Edward Lott '05 will talk about his work on view in the alumni biennial exhibition Rally in the ICA at MECA.



MFA alum Nancy Nesvet curated the show Celebrate Labor: Where Art Meets Politics, on view at VisArts in Rockville, MD through September 20. The show features large scale reproductions of the mural removed from the Maine Department of Labor. Artist Judy Taylor will give a talk and MECA President Don Tuski will participate in a panel discussion.

Faculty member Adriane Herman will present at Pop Tech! in October.

Faculty member Philip Brou was featured in the September issue of Portland magazine.

The Quimby Family Foundation awarded MECA $40,000 to support collaborative programming in summer 2012 between the ICA and the MFA departments.

Alum Owen Bissex '06 helped create one of the world’s largest dinosaur models for the Children’s Museum
of Indianapolis.

Painting alum Craig Taylor '96 had a solo exhibition at the Sue Scott Gallery in New York.

Located at 522 Congress Street in the heart of the Portland Arts District, MECA offers a BFA degree in 10 studio majors, an MFA in Studio Arts, a Post- Baccalaureate in Art Education and Continuing Studies for youths and adults. The Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA and the Joanne Waxman Library are free and open to the public.
