June's Program Highlights

. Delivered workshop to 12 youth in Alameda
. Started new cooking class with 15 adults
. 28 people attended Grub party with guest chef Keba Konte
. 30 new Grub Box members joined in June
. 329 Grub Boxes distributed in the month
. Hired Geralina Fortier as Program Assistant
. Green 4 All signed on as new distribution site
. Harvest 998 lbs of produce at farm & gardens
. 1,000 plant starts of 20 varieties in greenhouse
. 748 intern hours completed this month



Meet Robert Ogilve - Person of the Month and New Board Member

ImageRobert Ogilvie directs Planning for Healthy Places at Public Health Law & Policy. Over the past 15 years he has worked extensively in community development and planning to help improve low- and middle-income neighborhoods. Prior to joining PHLP, he served as a faculty member in the Dept. of City and Regional Planning at UC Berkeley, and as Director of Volunteers at the Partnership for the Homeless in New York City. He has also worked as a consultant to city and county governments, nonprofit organizations, and neighborhood activists. He is the author of "Voluntarism, Community Life, and the American Ethic" (Indiana University Press, 2004), an examination of what motivates people to participate in volunteer programs. Robert is a graduate of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and the University of South Carolina, and he holds a PhD in political science from Columbia University. We look forward to Robert's experience and knowledge as the newest member of our Board of Directors. Thank you Robert!



Flavors of the Garden - Saturday, August 1

A thank you celebration in appreciation of YOU! Visit us at our lovely 55th St. Garden. 1167 - 55th St., about 1.5 blocks west of San Pablo. 12-2:30pm. Featuring live music from the Western Whistle Blowers, delicious drinks and yummy appetizers made from organic ingredients grown in People's Grocery's farm and gardens. Bring your friends and family. Everyone welcome and it's free!

Meet us at the farm or ride with People's Grocery. Carpool leaves at 9:30am sharp from 3236 Market St., West Oakland, back by 3:45. Light snacks provided.

Grub Party - Saturday July 18

Come get your grub on at these free monthly events, celebrating West Oakland by connecting our community, our cultural flare, and our food to health and nutrition. 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m at the M. Robinson Baker YMCA, 3265 Market St., Oakland.

Summertime Grub Boxes have lots of delicious organic fruits and veggies just waiting to come home to you. Each box has 10-12 different seasonal selections of produce. Pick-ups are weekly on Tuesday afternoon in Oakland. Eat healthy and support People's Grocery's!

After a year of launching and managing the Grub Box Program, Jason Uribe will be transitioning his work to focus on managing food production at People’s Grocery’s urban gardens.
