News Team
Grants from the Northwest Area Foundation and F. R. Bigelow Foundation allow ThreeSixty’s staff to teach two chapters of News Team, an introductory journalism program, at the Star Tribune in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul Pioneer Press in downtown St. Paul this fall. The classes train high school students in key journalism skills ranging from story ideas and interviewing sources to organizing stories and writing great leads. They are open to teens from throughout the Twin Cities.
Fourteen students have enrolled in the Minneapolis class and spent their first class on the streets near the Metrodome interviewing fans before the Vikings-Packer game. Spots are still open for the St. Paul News Team, which starts Tuesday, November 10. Download application and mail or fax completed applications to ThreeSixty’s staff.

Dear ThreeSixty Friend and Supporter,
On September 8, the first day of school in much of the country, President Obama challenged the nation’s students to stay in school and work harder.
“If you don't do that -- if you quit on school -- you're not just quitting on yourself, you're quitting on your country,” he told them.
Wonder how teens respond? You’ll find out at www.threesixtyjournalism.org.
In an exciting collaborative effort, ThreeSixty and teen journalism programs in LA and New York City have produced a compelling series of videos, essays and articles by teens responding to the President’s challenge.
They write about dropping out of school and returning. About aiming high and achieving. About schools that failed them and schools that saved them.
Here’s what Minneapolis senior Julie Nguyen writes about how she and other students encouraged a friend to return to school. “When I think about Nico giving up on himself, I remember being a bit disappointed but still hopeful. Now that I see him trying to get himself together and graduate, I know that worrying about him and pushing him was worth my time.”
We’re grateful for the support of Best Buy, which funded this special project and will host all the content on www.at15.com starting later this week. Best Buy will also host discussion boards where teens from across the nation can share their own experiences and talk about these issues.
Enjoy their work.

ThreeSixty's "Inside the Circle" blog |
| |
Today, ThreeSixty’s staff launches the “Inside the Circle” blog. Annie Nelson, our youth publications editor, Kate Borman, our AmeriCorps*VISTA marketing manager, and I will share news of what’s happening with ThreeSixty, our students, supporters, alumni and events.
We also write about education and about journalism – topics near to our hearts and at the center of ThreeSixty’s mission. Journalism today is a conversation, not a lecture. So let us know if we or our students inform or inspire you. |
