"Setting The Stage" Campaign Pledges nears $25,000!

We are within $1,000 of achieving our $25,000 target by August 31.  Some of our donors have had less successful summers than they expected and have had to reduce their pledge, so we need one last push to get the checks we need by the end of the month.

If you have pledged, but not yet sent your check in, we need all our funds by August 31, so please send your money!   If you didn't already find a way to contribute to this campaign, please do.  We're asking our supporting circuses to raise $5 per student towards the campaign.

Raising these funds will allow us to create a new website and hire professional staff to manage our operations.  With this structure in place we can move ahead with our plan to help youth circuses achieve a tenfold increase the number of youth they serve.

To date, all these circuses have stepped up to contribute to this campaign.

  • The kids at CircEsteem in Chicago, IL are setting aside earnings from gigs for AYCO
  • Circus Harmony, St Louis, MO will pass the hat at shows in August (after they finish with their own campaign to get to Israel this summer!
  • Circus Minimus, New York, NY will dedicate end-of-camp shows to AYCO
  • Youth from The Circus Project in Portland, OR have committed their time to help with the campaign
  • Hope St Circus, Los Angeles, CA is making thank you cards for AYCO to use
  • My Nose Turns Red in Covington, KY is pledging $5 from each of its advanced troupe members
  • Circus Arts Institute, Atlanta, GA is sending a portion of student fees
  • Stone Soup Circus, Princeton, NJ is asking students from their free classes to make a contribution and dedicating their end-of-camp show to AYCO.
  • CircusMecca, Mendocino, CA is donating the earnings from their gigs, and all the class proceeds for youth classes in May and June to AYCO
  • Sailor Circus, Sarasota, FL is joining in through a letter campaign to reach their students
  • Amazing Grace Circus, Nyack, NY has promised to find a way to help out
  • Xelias Aerial Arts Studio, Minneapolis, MN passed that hat and raised money at student showcases
  • Philadelphia Circus School held an AYCO fund raiser
  • Circus Mojo, KY has promised to find a way to contribute
  • Bindlestiff's Cavalcade of Youth, NY passed a hat at their Bindlestiff Cavalcade of Youth shows at Bard College Music Festival in August
What can your circus do?  However you can help, let us know your plans.  E-mail zoe@americanyouthcircus.org

New Website -- Your Contributions Needed!

Our new website will be launched next month.  With this new site, members can manage their own profiles, search for one another, register for events, join discussions and track down information.  During late August, we'll be testing the site for smooth running, and we’ll go live in September.

AYCO's website will be the hub of its service to members.  To be effective, we need to populate the site with information that our members will value.  This needs to come from you, our members and supporters.  Please send us documents, videos, pictures or links that you think AYCO members could benefit from.  If it's not your own work, please let us know the source. We’ll make sure they are shared on the site with the author’s permission.  Here's our wish list:

Articles reviewing equipment alternatives and providing impartial guidance on choices:
  • Portable aerial rigs
  • Tightwires
  • Juggling and other manipulative equipment
  • Safety mats
  • Aerial rigging equipment
  • Other suggestions

Articles about equipment you can make yourself

  • Tightwires
  • Juggling and other manipulative equipment
  • Stilts
  • Other suggestions

Teaching resources that others can use:

  • Booklists
  • Warm-up games
  • Skill progression lists for any circus area

Hot Tamales at the Circus Project

The Circus Project in Portland, Oregon has been singled out for support by the Tamal Team,
makers of delicious homemade tamales in Portland. The Tamal Team decided to make the Circus Project its designated charity for the next two months.
- Jen Cohen Artistic/Executive Director, The Circus Project

From Nelda and Gerardo, Tamal Team :

"WOW!" was my first impression when I saw the Circus Project students perform at their 2009 Benefit Show, "Animare.", says Nelda of the Tamal Team.  My partner, Gerardo had volunteered as a musician for the show, and I, as always, played the role of the active observer.  That night I saw four graceful, strong, and talented artists perform.  It was only later I discovered that they were a group of at-risk youth who had gone through an incredible transformation over the past year, thanks to the Circus Project's Intensive Training Program for Homeless and At-risk Youth.
