Healthy Food-a-thon SUPPORT THE DIG YOUTH AS THEY STRIVE TO BE HEALTHY EATERS! Last summer DIG youth gave up fast food and soda for one month and raised over $2000 in the process from supporters! During their Healthy Food-a Thon the youth had long conversations about the role fast food and soda has on our bodies, our communities, and what we can do to improve our situation. This year from July 19th through August 17th the DIG youth ar e giving up soda, fast food AND we have invited youth from other programs (a total of 80 youth!). We are hoping to positively impact our personal diets and we are examining ways to improve our community food resources. The DIG youth are continually studying how to prepare and budget healthy affordable meals and during the Healthy Food-a-Thon, they’ll have a greater incentive to do so. Please visit the youth at the Durham Farmers Market to read their food autobiographies. Support them by making a pledge per day for how long they can go without fast food and soda. We accept pledges for $.50 on up (last year someone pledged $10!!) a day for 30 days. Or email Santos@seedsnc.org with your pledge amount TODAY. We also want to invite YOU to take the Soda & Fast Food Fast!! Email Santos if you want to accept the challenge and we’ll check in with you throughout the month.
The SEEDlings Club is looking for a few new members...

We focus on martial arts and creative movement classes that build confidence and fitness. The SEEDlings have daily homework tutors and many opportunities to learn about the environment and nutrition in lots of fun ways. If interested, please call Thaddeus at 683-1197, or email to tbennett@seedsnc.org.
Community Gardening Tips
Do you want to see your plants boost in their yield? Try blanketing the soil surrounding your garden plants with a layer of leaf mulch. About 2-3 inches will do. It helps retain soil moisture, prevent weeds from sprouting and it insulates the soil, cooling the soil on hot days. With less moisture loss you can speed plant growth. Leaf mulching will also attract earthworms and builds good crumbly soil texture.
