Kathy, thanks for signing up my newsletter-here's the newly updated version!

When you try to help a child who learns differently, you need to learn yourself: How do I teach this child? How do we keep going?

Sometimes it's hard to find the right resources. So in each issue, I'll review a book that you should consider. (These are independent reviews for which I receive nothing.) Not every review will appeal to each of you, since our children's needs differ. This brief review will be linked to a complete review on my website. Each issue will also give tips and tell you about websites to help you.

I'm writing you because you signed up by e-mail, or after hearing me speak at a convention, conference, or support group meeting. If you do not want to receive further mailings from me (and my company, Learn Differently), unsubscribe now scrolling to the bottom of this email and clicking on the unsubscribe link.

I won't share your e-mail address with anyone without your permission.

Finding the keys to helping your child learn

ImageCarol Barnier’s The Big WHAT NOW Book of Learning Styles, is a practical guide to inexpensive, easy ways to help children enjoy learning. Carol shares easy-to-do activities and multi-sensory games that can enrich any curriculum for students of all ages. Better yet, this book may help you find keys to how to reach a struggling learner. The author is a wise, witty and encouraging homeschooling mother of children with learning differences, as well as a popular speaker and author. The first thirty pages help you understand learning styles, what to do and not to do about them. The bulk of the book addresses a chapter each to spelling, writing, reading, math history, geography, and science. Carol concludes with chapters on how to review material, and “Things Your Children Wish You Knew About How They Learn.” At 192 pages long, this new book is easy to read, with large print, wide margins, and cute cartoons.

This Month's Tip: Take a break!

ImageAs you read this, some of you feel the excitement of starting a new year of homeschooling a child with learning problems. For others, you may feel terrified of something new: perhaps your first year homeschooling, or your first year of homeschooling high school. Perhaps you have one more student to homeschool this year, when you feel that training one of two of these special learners could be a full-time job in itself.
Let me urge you to take a break this summer. If you cannot manage a vacation, can you and your spouse get away for 48 hours? 24? As homeschooling parents, we mustn’t let our spouses think we have married homeschooling.
If your spouse can't join you, or you are a single parent, a short trip or even a day trip by yourself can refresh you and give you perspective on your children.

See chapter 26, "Staying Sane," in my book for more tips.

"Staying Sane" Talk available now through August 15!

Speaking of keeping your sanity, the folks at the Northern Virginia Home Education conference recorded my talk, "Staying Sane." It's part of their complete conference in CD, with Susan Wise Bauer's keynotes, 50 workshops, and handouts.

To get this recording, order before August 15 here. Recordings from other conference are available here, too.

Helping parents help struggling learners

ImageAfter years of homeschooling a bright child with learning problems, I know how hard it can be to find the best ways to help. That's why I wrote my book, Homeschooling Your Struggling Learner.

Whether you're an old friend, someone who heard me speak at a convention this spring or two years ago, or a reader who e-mailed me after finding my website, I hope to help you.

You probably know someone who could benefit from my book, newsletter, or website. Please use the "Click here" link at the end of this e-mail to send them a newsletter.

Invite them to visit my website, where they can read a sample chapter and learn more.

Enjoy your summer,

Kathy Kuhl
