Kathy, thank you for signing up for my newsletter. I hope you've been having a good summer.

Whether we homeschool year round or start around Labor Day, September is a time of beginnings. Some of us are eager to start, but others feel some fear—or even dread. How can we best help them learn? We long for some fresh ideas and encouragement. Here are some resources to help.

Please use the “Click here” link at the end of this newsletter to forward this to a friend. Remember, I keep all e-mail addresses confidential.

Image Sharon Hensley has updated her classic book

Sharon Hensley has updated and enlarged her excellent introduction to homeschooling children with all kinds of special needs, not only the learning differences I focus on, but physical disabilities, mental retardation, and more. With 24 years experience in special education, and 17 years homeschooling, Sharon has helped many families through her home education service, Almaden Valley Christian School.

To learn more about Sharon’s book, and why you might need this expanded and updated third edition, read my complete review here.

Six On, One Off

ImageSeptember is a time for new beginnings, so here’s a great resolution: take a day off every week. You—and your family—need a rest. Take a walk, have friends over, read together, take a nap. Do something enjoyable and low key. Keep housework to an absolute minimum for the day—disaster management only. Don’t shop, not even online or window shopping. (Check the fridge the day before so you won't have to dash off for groceries.)
One mother I interviewed for Homeschooling Your Struggling Learner said that her family has seen great benefits since they started “guarding the Sabbath.” Some do this out of a Biblical conviction and build a day around worship and fellowship, while others enjoy the change of routine for its practical benefits.
Give it a try.

For more tips on how to homeschool without going crazy, see chapter 26, "Staying Sane," of my book, Homeschooling Your Struggling Learner.

Image Links of the Month

Sharon Hensley offers more than the book reviewed above. She runs a homeschool service, Almaden Valley Christian School, which supports homeschooling families with a range of services, including long distance consulting, and for California families, a support group and an ISP. (That's Independent Study Program, a.k.a. umbrella school, not Internet Service Provider!)

Twenty different Special Education academic journals offer free online access now through October 31. Titles include: Journal of Learning Disabilities, Autism, Communications Disorders Quarterly, Gifted Child Quarterly.

I receive no benefit from providing these links. Please let me know if you find them helpful or not, and why.
