Art in The Streets

At MOCA L.A.: April 17 - August 8, 2011

A popular and controversial exhibit, Art in The Streets, follows the development of street and graffiti art from the 1970s to the present.  The show features paintings, sculptures, and interactive installations by 50 impressive artists including Shepard Fairey and celebrated British artist Bansky.  Although the exhibit has been a success for MOCA, there has been a rise in graffiti vandalism in Los Angeles since it opened.

Frida Kahlo Retrospective

Mexico City, Mexico celebrates the 100th anniversary of Frida Kahlo's birth with the most extensive ever retrospective of her paintings and drawings, as well as family photos and other personal memorabilia.  Kahlo is known for numerous self-portraits imbued with strong emotions that represent her lifelong  physical and psychological struggles.  The show is currently on view through Aug. 19, 2011.

Local Artist Feature: Tom Post

Tom Post is a fine art painter and instructor residing in Grand Rapids, MI.  He received his MFA in Painting from Kendall College of Art & Design, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Painting there.

Post will be exhibiting four  portraits from his Visionaries and Malcontents series at Open Concept Gallery, September-October 2011.  The portraits portray depict individuals who have had a deep influence on Post's life and creative process.   

54th Venice Biennale                

In June, the 54th Venice Biennale opened its pavilion doors to the general public, marking the beginning of an event that has come to be known as one of the most comprehensive and visionary surveys of international contemporary art. Every other year, the Biennale gathers the world's most promising artists and gives them the chance to compete for the prestigious Golden Lion award. This year, the art team of Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla represents the United States of America. The exhibit comprised of five installations, is called Gloria, which literally translates to "glory" in English.
