Honoring Cy Twombly

Influential artist, Cy Twombly died on June 5th in Rome after battling cancer for several years. Twombly was born in Lexington, Virginia and studied at a number of U.S art colleges before traveling extensively in Europe. He was well known for his large, calligraphic paintings and played a key role in post-war abstract art. Curate Kirk Varnedoe described Twombly's work as “influential among artists, discomfiting to many critics and truculently difficult not just for a broad public, but for sophisticated initiates of postwar art as well.”

Untitled, 1970. Pencil, plywood, colored-pencil, oil paint, wax crayon and scotch tape.

Art History References in Pop Culture

Art is visionary and serves as inspiration for a multitude of projects and endeavors. Many people do not recognize the abundance of postmodern art influences in contemporary popular culture. Justin Timberlake's fans may be surprised to discover that this “Dick in the Box” skit was actually a reference to art history, specifically the work in 1960's of the Bulgarian artist Valie Export in Vienna Austria.
