Saturday December 19, 2009 – “Canal Business Idol” Competition

San Rafael, California – Sixty Canal youth ages 11 -18 will vie to win the “Canal Business Idol” Competition, Saturday December 19 from 1pm to 4pm at Pickleweed Community Center, 50 Canal Street, San Rafael. Students, participants in Canal Alliance’s afterschool program, will use Microsoft Powerpoint to present their business plans, their marketing web sites, and their iMovie commercials to panels of business experts and community members.

Judges for the competition include: Dick Fletcher, First Vice President, Tamalpais Bank; Noah Harris Canal Alliance Small Businesses Coordinator & SBDC; Seth Barad, Business Consultant; Dan Mahoney, Heffernan Insurance; Joe Goldman, Canal Alliance Volunteer and former businessman; Whitney Hoyt, San Rafael High School Principal; Keith Axtell, Rotary Microcredit Program Coordinator; Mandy Gamarra, Dominican University’s Green MBA Program; Allison Shrier- Dominican University’s Green MBA Program; and Carl Ilg, Mission Rotary Club.

Canal Alliance is raising $12,000 to provide micro-grants to Canal youth whose business plans are selected for further development through our new Canal Alliance Young Entrepreneurs Project. Tax Preparation Assistants

Canal Alliance, in conjunction with Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Marin County is getting ready for Tax Season 2010 and we need your help preparing taxes. During the 2009 tax season, You, along with our other volunteers and staff, helped to prepare 2,900 plus tax returns and put more than 2.4 million dollars in total refunds back in the hands of families and individuals in our community!
