Friends,
Open Door is 35! The Open Door program was launched in 1975 with one class of 9 children. Today we have two schools (and a third on the way) collectively serving over 200 children each year. We are so proud that the notion of a school that embraces and nurtures all children, whatever their needs, is flourishing thirty-five years later.
Our anniversary celebration continues with Cake, Rattle & Roll, our fun grown-up
party and fundraiser, on Saturday, October 16, at the Club Room in the 360 Condominiums. We encourage everyone to join us for the
festivities: fabulous music, food and
drink from some of Austin’s finest restaurants and caterers, the spirited
cakewalk and wine ring toss, a dazzling silent auction, and most importantly,
great company.
We’ll be honoring a few of the people who have been
instrumental to our success:
Jackie Goodman
and Brandy Griffin will be awarded
the Nira Changwatchai Living the Mission
Award. Jackie taught at Open Door during our early days and
returned to work her magic at the Central School a few years ago, following her
service as City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem. Brandy is adored by students and parents
alike at the East School.
The Lack Family
Visionary Volunteer Award will be presented to Dianna Perez, who has worn many hats at Open Door over the past
fifteen years: teacher, parent, founder
of Camp Chef Kids, and volunteer extraordinaire for Cake, Rattle & Roll.
The Dell
Foundation, an ardent contributor to Open Door for the past five years,
will receive the Opening New Doors Award not
only for their commitment to the Open Door mission but for their stellar work
in the Austin community.
Open Door Video
A big Thanks to Ray Machuca, Erica Shamaly, Will Meredith and all involved parents, teachers, and supporters for their hard work and amazing talent creating this promotional video about Open Door. Click here to see the video.
Open Door East Accreditation Update
Open Door East is in the final throes of the NAEYC
accreditation process. We began working
over two years ago to improve the physical facilities to meet accreditation
standards and have been tweaking the program and compiling mounds of
documentation (there are over 400 standards!) as well. We’ve passed the
Candidacy stage and are planning for a two-day site visit between September 9-28. Only 33 programs in Austin are currently
accredited by NAEYC, so we hope to be joining this elite group, which includes
Open Door Central.
Open Door in the News
Open Door has been in the news recently. Click the links below to see us on New 8 Austin and Fox.
Help Our Planet! Help Our Cause!
Open Door receives funds from Planet Green when you recycle and buy recycled. We can receive a donation from Planet Green for every inkjet cartridge or cell phone recycled. Each school will soon have a drop off box. Find out more by clicking here.
Love A special thanks to the following donors and volunteers:
$50,000 from the Dell Foundation, a two-year grant for literacy and arts programming
$5,000 from 3M to help pay for our Camp Chef Kids program.
$5,000 from the Lola Wright Foundation for a playground structure at the East School.
$2,000 from the MFI Foundation to help pay for our promotional video.
A group from National Instruments helped build a shed and sandbox as well as refill sand and gravel on the East School playgrounds. They did a lot of work on a hot day in a small amount of time. Thank you!
