Listen to Last Sunday’s Sermon: The Pharisee's Facebook Profile

On Sunday I used the very contemporary concept of a Facebook Profile to illustrate Jesus’ parable of the righteous Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee is so impressed with himself that he hardly notices anyone else. The tax collector, a wretched sinner, is only visible as a contrast with the Pharisee’s righteousness. The Pharisee looks at his own profile and he is pleased with what he sees. But is that who he really is? Are we really the version of ourselves we put forward for others to see? How does God see us?

Next Sunday’s Lessons

Last week we heard the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. This week we hear the story of Zacchaeus, another tax collector. Jesus calls on Zacchaeus, a sinner, a rich man, and certainly a very unpopular person, to be his host. Jesus reached out to Zacchaeus long before he repented. It was a scandal for Jesus even to speak with this man, let alone go into his house to share a meal! Let this give you hope. God is not waiting for us to get our acts together before calling and blessing us. God is calling us now, just as we are, to receive God’s love and to be God’s blessing in the world.

Greetings from the Treasurer:

Last week you should have received your Pledge Statement. If you are current, we thank you. If not, please try to catch up on your pledge as soon as possible.

It is not too early to begin thinking about next year. As we start the Stewardship Campaign, please think about our church and how you can help it grow and thrive.

Remember every little bit helps! A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Don Riccardo
Treasurer

Greetings from your Senior Warden!

Dear Friends,

We are about to start our Stewardship Campaign for 2011. You will be getting information in your mail very soon and I ask that you look it over carefully. As you consider your pledge for next year please ask yourself three questions:

1. What does St. Dunstan’s mean to me?
2. How have I grown spiritually by being a member of the congregation?
3. How can I help our congregation to grow and be a blessing to our community?

We are blessed at St. Dunstan’s in many ways. The warmth, love, and friendship that exists here is testimony to the fact that the Holy Spirit is with us. As God leads us into the future, we will grow in Him.

You will have opportunities during the campaign to make a difference in the lives of our congregation as well as in our neighborhood. Please take advantage of these opportunities. By giving of ourselves to others, we are living into the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Blessings,
Mary E. Pacher

We Are On A Mission!

This year you will notice something new in our annual stewardship campaign. As we ask for your support for St. Dunstan's Church we will also be inviting you to participate in community outreach activities. We believe that God has blessed us to be a blessing to others. This is the ancient pattern of calling. In Isaiah 49:6, we read:

[The Lord] says,
‘It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to restore the survivors of Israel;
I will give you as a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’

We at St. Dunstan’s have been blessed in many ways over the past 61 years. All this year we have been talking about discovering what God is calling us to be as a congregation. That process is bearing much fruit, and one theme has appeared repeatedly. We are called to be a blessing to others: to the people in the neighborhoods in which we live, to the people we work with, to our friends and families, and to people in need across the globe. The blessings we have received have a PURPOSE! We are on a mission from God!

Our Stewardship team has found three local opportunities to which to contribute:

  • Ronald Bog Park Clean Up & Restoration-Saturday mornings Nov. 6 and Nov. 20, 9 AM - Noon
  • Greenwood Food Bank Volunteer Night-Friday evening, Nov. 12, 6-8 PM

Please sign up for one or more of these events. We would like to go to these activities as a group, perhaps even with t-shirts identifying us as members of St. Dunstan's Church. We are on a mission from God – and this is how we will realize that mission!

Maybe you know of a hands-on volunteer opportunity to which we can send a group of St. Dunstan’s people to support. We are on a mission from God, and God may be using you to let us know about the next volunteer opportunity!

This Sunday we will launch our Stewardship campaign. This will be a joyful celebration of our history, our friendships and our mission. The theme for this year’s campaign is the “Stone Soup Economy.” I will illustrate this theme in my sermon and then we’ll hear more from the Stewardship committee. Come, be a part of our mission.

Your brother in Christ,

The Rev. David Marshall

Community Engagement

Donations continue for the Greenwood Food Bank in preparation for the holiday season. Non-perishable items can be left in the big wooden box to the right of the entrance to the Narthex. Please keep in mind that many of these persons do not have microwaves, ovens, stoves, or refrigerators to prepare and store food items. If you have any questions, please contact Warren Broderick @ 206-362-3217 or Al Bahlkow @ 206-282-4431.

Prayer of the Lamb Community Group meets at St. Dunstan’s on the second Sunday of the month from 7-9 pm. These ongoing groups are open to receive and integrate persons new to the practice of the Prayer of the Lamb. Newcomers and those interested in learning this spiritual practice are welcome along with those who have participated in an introductory seminar. Contact Beverly Hosea or Pieter Drummond at 206-713-5321 or PrayeroftheLamb1@mac.com prior to attending in order to receive introduction to the meditation practice.

The Canterbury Faire at St. Dunstan’s will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. This year we have added some new vendors and a great twist! Having trouble trying to think of Christmas presents or Stocking Stuffers? The 6th of November is not too early to start tucking away those special presents.

We have our traditional antiques and collectables, while our vendors will be displaying woodworking, jams, jewelry, photography, cards, American Doll clothes, knitted items, candy, paper jewelry, wine lamp shades, tote bags, scarves, almonds, beads and leather.

Finally and not least, visit some specialty rooms, specializing in unique Treasures and an exhibit of Christmas decorations, plus a good old fashioned “stuff room”.

Plan to spend the day, starting first with a visit to the “Coffee Bar”. After your shopping, sit down to “The Bells” and “Madrigalia” music groups, with a homemade LUNCHEON of either Mulligatawny or Bean Soup, hot bread, cookies, coffee or tea.

For any further information, feel free to contact Lou Gardiner @ 206-362-6024 or our church office @ 206- 363-4319.

All Saints Sunday, November 7: If you have loved ones who have died since All Saints Sunday 2009, we would like to include these names in a special prayer list to be read on Sunday, November 7.  Please call the church office @206-363-4319 or contact office@sdchp.org by Wednesday, November 3 to be included in the service bulletin.

Calling all Ushers, Greeters, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, and Acolytes!

On Saturday, November 20, starting at 9:30 am, we will have a Worship Ministries Workshop to go over guidelines as we enter the Advent and Christmas season. Some special services are planned, such as Lessons and Carols on December 12, where we will need additional volunteers. Please plan to attend this workshop to review responsibilities and upcoming events.

2011 Stewardship Time and Talent Surveys are available in the Narthex on the table under the Vestry Corner of the bulletin board. Please plan to return the surveys on Ingathering Sunday November 14, or drop them off at  the church office, or mail to P. O. Box 33029, Shoreline, WA 98133.

Church Rosters are available in the Narthex. If there are further corrections or additions, please contact the church office @ 206-363-4319 or office@sdchp.org by November 15 so that a new update will be ready by Advent.

Nametags on Sundays: Be sure you request a nametag if you do not already have one. We have a clipboard on the welcome table where you can request a nametag. We have had 4 requests so far. We will continue to collect names through Advent, and order new ones as we begin the new church year.
