Aloha Friend,

We've grown, our website has grown, and our aquaponics farm has grown during the time we've done commercial aquaponics for a living. It's time to take a "snapshot" of where we are today; we'll start with the aquaponics technology we personally developed and talk about our milestones (because a lot of you may not know about this stuff being available), then give you some resource links and a little "map" of our website's resources for new and aspiring aquaponics growers.

And because you may not have all seen this offer in previous newsletters, here it is again: Our three-day Aquaponics Technology Training, in Hawaii or Tennessee is available at no charge to anyone who has taken an aquaponics training from Nelson and Pade, UVI, Green Acres, Max Meyers, or Aquatic Ecosystems. If you take one of our courses; build one of our systems, and are not satisfied, we will refund your money 100%. That's the guarantee we make! Email Tim directly to qualify for this FREE training offer.

Thank you all for supporting aquaponics over the years, and helping develop this new and promising technology for feeding the world.

Some Of The "Friendly" Technology:

  • Pioneered inoculation of aquaponics systems with commercially available nitrifying bacteria cultures to reduce start up time waiting period.
  • Construction methods and techniques that put commercial aquaponics systems economically within anyone's reach.
  • DIY Tabletop systems, Micro Systems, and Family Systems that can be built for a fraction of the cost of available "kits", AND are more productive.
  • Energy-efficient aeration and water pumping systems that use approximately 10% of the electricity of the systems on which we learned.
  • Ebb and flow "sprouting table" systems using aquaponics water that cut labor requirements by 90%, and double new seed sprouting productivity as compared to conventional "nursery table" sprouting methods.
  • Demonstration of how organic aquaponics systems eliminate ALL mosquitoes in the surrounding area.
  • USDA Organic Certification (we were the first in the world) gives our growers double the price for their vegetables.
  • First to get an aquaponics farm Food Safety Certified in 2009.
  • The first to culture Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Giant Malaysian River Prawn) on a commercial scale in aquaponic system troughs.
  • Plant sprouting and nursery techniques that put 3.5 times as many plants into your raft aquaponics system as our nearest competitor's systems do.
  • The first completely off-grid aquaponics systems of any size: 512 square feet of trough area, with an alternate energy system good for 20 years at a cost half that of buying power from the grid.
  • Development of the economical and efficient Aquaponic Solar Greenhouse with partner Franz Schreier allows you to grow with three feet of snow outside, or in 105 degree heat. Can be operated on-grid or off-grid using passive solar and geothermal heating and cooling techniques for maximum sustainability.

"In The Farmily"

Aloha All!

The biggest problem we've found with aquaponics is that people are looking for the magic potion that makes $500 a day with little or no work. We tell them time and again that business experience and training is necessary, and doing the work oneself is necessary; but people often hear only what they want to.

Aquaponics is work, and someone needs to do the work. It's not like having stocks and bonds that you just receive a dividend check from (I know, that isn't working so well now either). You need to know about business, for you can grow great vegetables and fish and then not know how to get paid for them.

These systems do grow great vegetables and fish with very little skill required, and half as much labor as growing in the soil. It is work, however. You can't pay farm workers $20/hour to do all your work and still make money yourself. But in this economy, it is going to be a lot easier to find farm workers than it was four years ago.

After the construction industry on the Big Island collapsed three years ago, aquaponics is the best alternative we've found. Our past thirty years has included stints in the computer business, boatbuilding business, home construction, advertising, tourism, drafting and design, heavy equipment operation, sailmaking, cabinetwork, and furniture making. All those businesses are at a standstill now, and we'd be in foreclosure without our aquaponics farm.
