The other Latitude45 artists are on the road bringing their virtuosity to audiences around the globe. Mothers, daughters, and a pianist
Pianist Louise Bessette, famous for her subtle and intense interpretations of 20th century music, has lent her musical voice to one the most powerful media of our times: film. Mères et Filles (The Hidden Diary) is the latest film by French filmmaker Julie Lopes-Corval, starring Catherine Deneuve and Montreal-born actress Marie-Josée Croze. The soundtrack by Patrick Watson relies heavily on piano music to give the film a stirring and touching undercurrent, and Louise Bessette gives it even more emotional depth.
Mères et Filles was released on October 7 and is featured by the Chicago International Film Festival in the end of October. November 22 gives an opportunity to hear Louise Bessette live with her “Eternal chimes” program at Montreal’s prestigious eXcentris.

Jenny Lin premieres Vivian Fung
The Metropolis Ensemble and pianist Jenny Lin perform a concert of premieres at New York’s Poisson Rouge in November. Reverb gathers works by young composers Jakub Ciupinski, Vivian Fung, Erin Gee, and Cristina Spinei. The main work of the concert is Vivian Fung’s new piano concerto, Dreamscapes, which is inspired by the gamelan music of Bali. Integrating spiky, syncopated rhythms, sudden tempo changes, and exotic scales into her own voice, Vivian Fung has created a music of shimmering harmonies and interlocking rhythms, which will be perfectly matched by Jenny Lin’s sparkling and sensitive style.

Do you have a minute?
Multi-media pianist Guy Livingston comes to North America with his “One Minute More” tour, featuring 60 short films on 60 piano pieces by 60 composers. In October, Livingston premieres the show in Dayton, Chicago, Montreal, New York City, and at the Library of Congress in Washington. The tour is made possible by the Netherland America Foundation and the Dutch Fund for Performing Arts.
The perfect accessory for the show comes from German watch company STAMPS. The producer of hip-time pieces has made a limited-edition watch, taking stills from the films. The watches are available in design boutiques and museum shops or online at www.guylivingston.com/sixty/watches.

Vladimir Mischouk teaches mastery
Russian pianist and Tchaikovsky Competition prize winner Vladimir Mischouk is holding a master class at the International Piano Academy at Lake Como in Italy from October 18 to 23. After being one of the academy’s first students in the early 1990s, Mischouk now returns as a professor, teaching seven students chosen from a worldwide field of 400 applicants. He joins a faculty of outstanding pianists, among them Martha Argerich and Leon Fleisher.

Tafelmusik in Mexico
This year’s Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato/Mexico is themed “400 years Galileo and the telescope”, and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra has been invited to perform the first Spanish version of The Galileo Project: Music of the Spheres. The project is Tafelmusik’s contribution to the International Year of Astronomy, marking 2009 as the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s development and use of the astronomical telescope. It combines music, words and images to explore the artistic, cultural and scientific world in which 17th- and 18th-century astronomers lived and did their work. The concerts at the Cervantino Festival take place on October 21 and 22.

Alain Trudel conducts the Magic Flute
Conductor Alain Trudel makes his professional opera début on November 7 at the Opéra de Montreal, where he leads the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal in Mozart’s Magic Flute. The cast includes Karina Gauvin as Pamina, Aline Kutan as the Queen of the Night, John Tessier as Tamino, Aaron St. Clair Nicholson as Papageno, and Reinhard Hagen as Sarastro.

Duo Affinité in Western Canada
When Nadina Mackie Jackson and Guy Few showcased at the Pacific Contact conference in March, they immediately raised interest and enthusiasm for this unusual combination of bassoon and trumpet. This led to so many enthusiastic booking requests that they will tour Western Canada in late October 2009 and again in October 2010 with a series of chamber music concerts, following the lead of Baroque tradition, the inspiration of 19th century composers and the voices of today.

Latitude45 at Capacoa
As one of only 10 artists, clarinetist François Houle will showcase on this year’s CAPACOA in Calgary. He will perform some samples of his iridescent improvisations on November 7, 2009, from 10:20 pm to 10:50 pm at the Eckhardt-Grammatté Concert-Hall. The organizational side of Latitude 45 Arts Promotion will be represented by agent Mark Bradley.

Latitude45 Arts go to Asia
Asia is one of the most interesting and booming cultural markets of the world. Latitude45 Arts have already strong relations with many venues and presenters in the region, especially in China. Director Barbara Scales will visit two major conferences in October, followed by a visit to Beijing. At PAMS in Seoul, she will give a talk on management and representation of foreign artists in North America. Use this unique opportunity to meet her there in person!

News ALLA BREVE
→ Kleztory’s manager Marc Labelle will attend the WOMEX world music expo from October 28 to November 1, 2009 in Copenhagen/Denmark.
→ Pianist Lucille Chung begins her residency at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC on November 15, performing Ligeti's complete Music Ricercata and Saint-Saens Concerto No. 2 transcribed for solo piano by Bizet.
→ The Magellan Ensemble, a piano quartet founded by cellist Yegor Dyachkov, is ensemble in residence at the Chapelle du Bon Pasteur in Montreal, starting the season on October 29th with an all Czech program.

Makoto Nakura: Crossing cultural borders
Marimbist Makoto Nakura knows how to roam between different worlds and cultures. Born in Kobe, Japan, he in 1994 moved to New York City, becoming the first marimbist to win First Prize in the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Since then, he has pursued an impressive solo career in both the Eastern and the Western hemisphere, establishing himself as a true border-crosser and dedicated champion of the music of our time.
His latest project reflects his multi-cultural background and his personal history in a most individual way. Together with New York writer Greg Pierce he has created The Sea between Us, a literary and musical exploration of separation and relatedness, identity and transformation. The first part of the program combines music by Japanese composers with contemporary storytelling from Japan and works by Greg Pierce. The second part, Rust Letters, is a fictional correspondence between a man and woman separated by the sea, written and read by Greg Pierce, blended with Makoto’s arrangement of J.S. Bach’s Solo Violin Partita No. 3 in E.
In addition to the concert program, Makoto Nakura and Greg Pierce also offer an interactive storytelling session as outreach activity. Makoto will play a short musical phrase, and the participants will react to it by telling a short story, sentence by sentence. Makoto then will play another phrase, so that the story evolves further, as does the music. In the end, Makoto Nakura and Greg Pierce will play and read the entire piece and story in turns or even simultaneously.
