Team Shorabak

teamshorabak.jpg

It is amazing to think that my recent visit to Helmand Province, Afghanistan would result in the creation of another provincial swim and water polo team in Afghanistan.  Lieutenant Joshua Pogue, a Marine who I worked with was the one who identified a pool aboard the Shorabak Garrisson.  After many weeks of meetings and dissappointment, a team finally formed.  What started with no water in the pool has now turned to five days a week of athletes practicing.  Athletes are learning basic fundamentals of swimming and water polo, heard work, dedication, teamwork, and leadership.  This program is part of our strategic plan to grow water polo and aquatics programs in Afghanistan.

It was unfortunate that I was unable to stay for the entire inagural season of swimming and water polo in southern Afghanistan.  To be exact, I was only able to lead the program for a few weeks.  We were very fortunate to have two individuals step up to carry the torch.  Another co-worker of mine, Bartosz Lesniewicz, a Major from Marine Expeditionary Brigade Afghanistan lead the program after my absence.  Bartosz Lesniewicz has an extensive aquatics backround and he was able to find a quality replacement after one month.  Clinton Cowart is a Staff Sergeant with I Marine Expeditionary Force and has an impressive water polo backround.

As water polo in Afghanistan continues to grow, it is important to know that our sucesses are only because of the volunteers, donors, and supporters of our program.  With the local heroes that our provincial programs are producing and the experiences that these athletes will gain, it is amazing to see what we have already accomplished.

How You Can Help

You can directly make a difference to help Afghanistan Water Polo by volunteering your time and expertise in Marketing, Sponsorship, Legal Services, Advertising and Fundraising, Photography, Event Management, Web and Graphic Design, or simply the "whatever it takes" attitude that is the hallmark of volunteerism.

Among the many types of volunteers we are looking for, we are in need of a Public Relations Coordinator to augment the volunteer staff.  With the amount of good news stories that need to be promoted, our staff needs assistance from a volunteer to coordinate these efforts.  This position will take approximately 2-3 hours of time per week and can be done from anywhere, even while you are in your pajamas at home!  Email access, telephone skills, and a big heart are all you need to get started.

Please call (760) 451-1783 or email Jennifer Hamilton anytime at jenhamilton@afghanistanwaterpolo.com if you would like to volunteer!
